Cat person. I've never met a cat I couldn't get purring... People who have trouble with them just don't know how to treat them properly. My dad hated cats but he always thought you could train it like a dog, so our cats always hated him. Dogs like me too, but they are easy. I like the idea of cohabitating with an animal as opposed to "owning" one. As cheesy as it sounds, I feel more connected to nature that way. I used to be allergic, so I always missed out on the cat petting when I was little. I got over it, so that might also explain why I like them so much now.

As a person who works/goes out of town quite a bit, my rule is always get 2 cats so they can socialize each other and not be lonely.

Paedantic Basterd 07-15-2013 05:49 PM

I was thinking about how we bark at our dogs and meow at our cats, and I realized how ****ing weird it would be if they tried to imitate us without knowing what they were saying. Imagine your cat piping up to you and saying "Fork in here no pie" or something. I wonder if that's how we sound to them.

Maybe that's exactly what meowing is? I don't think cats really meow at each other.

CrazyVegn 07-15-2013 06:58 PM

Tx for the replies... my mom hates cats and loves dogs, but even she can admit what beautiful babies I have.

Paedantic Basterd 07-15-2013 07:12 PM

I'm like you, Duga, I think of myself as a companion to my cat, rather than an owner of it.

I have heard this, that cats meow pretty much just for the sake of communicating to people.

No he doesn't run away. But he likes to stay out all night. When I go to work in the morning, he runs in the house as soon as I open the door. If at night he wants to be let in, he'll give me a holler, the way meows sounds like a person saying "yo!" - kinda like "Yo! (let me in)". Another thing is ever time I walk by him he's some place new. He can move from the from floor mat in front of the back door (where he sun bathes) to the chair in the living room to the window sill in the kitchen without me ever see him walk to those places. It is like he floats to where ever he wants to be, kinda like the Cheshire Cat.

Reminds me of a cat that I used to have called Missy. He would go out during the night and there was like a cat club/hangout under the neighbors house and he would come running through an open window in my bedroom. One night I got a little cold so i went to close the window and he jetted inside the window. I closed the window and I heard "THUMP". I guess he must have messed with some other cat's woman and started a fight but decided to run away and I saved him from getting beat up.

I also like to think of Violet as being my companion rather than me being her master (although I am), I've also had a few dogs that can walk themselves too, it's not difficult to train them, hell I even had a dog that sounds like Bob the cat with two family's haha! You've just got to train them properly. :)

There are videos on YouTube with cats speaking to each other via meowing but I know its not a peer reviewed article however. I wonder why they meow so much at humans?

Generally they don't meow at each other. When they do it's rare and their owner is in the area. so they could be meowing about their owner to each other.

I heard cats only meow for the attention of humans, if they weren't domestic then they wouldn't do it as much.

I love all animals but dogs seem to take to me better than any other domestic pet, I've never had a cat of my own though so I don't know what it would be like. I think I kinda understand dogs more than I do cats, I can honestly say my dog Violet lives up the reputation of being man's best friend. We have some sort of weird bond in which I understand her and she seems to understand me, I've never had this with any other dog (I've had around 3 dogs in my life) but I think that's to do with me being too young to be my previous dog's master.

I love doggies, I can honestly say there is no dog I've come across so far that has intimidated me, including rottweilers, pitbulls (big softies at heart really but they're illegal over here) and all various breeds of "bad" dogs. I say "bad" because I don't believe any dog is bad unless they've been brought up that way.

I think it has more to do with different dogs having different personalities and you do create strong bonds with individual animals more so than others.

For example, I have three cats and my strongest bond is with Tails. I think it has more to do with me being all she's ever known since I had her when she was a baby kitten and had to feed her with a bottle. She's the most loyal of my cats and will always come when I call her regardless of if she feels like it or not.

KD I've only had for a year or so but she's super affectionate towards me quite often always rubbing up against me and feels super needy similar to a dog and it just bugs the **** out of me. I sometimes have to kick her away.

Porque, KD's son has this weird love/hate relationship with me. He's the most vocal but every time I pass him and he meows at me for attention when I lean down to pet him he gets all defensive like he's not sure what I'm going to do to him. He's the ultimate scaredy cat. I thought maybe it was something I was doing to him and have tried to comfort him all the time when I see him so he isn't so scared but good grief nothing works. He always meows when I walk pass him for attention but when I go to give it to him he can't decide if he wants me to pet him or run away. 50 percent of the time he'll run away.

Sansa Stark 08-01-2013 10:04 AM

I have never even met a mean pitbull, if a dog is mean though the fault lies with the owners. Also my dog is part rottweiler, I've never in my life met a nicer dog even if she is dumb as a brick

One of my best friends has a very rotund pitbull named Lucy who used to like to sit on me whenever I came over, like she was a lap dog.

It's ****ty over here we have a really corrupt person who heads Animal Control and he murders pitbulls on the regular and any dog who barks at him. It's really messed up.

Paedantic Basterd 08-01-2013 10:14 AM

I am so excited to be working at the shelter this month with their cats, and to foster one in my home.

Frownland 08-01-2013 10:30 AM

Ja, rotties and pits are sweethearts if you don't raise them like an *******.

As with a lot of people, I love both of these pets. Right now I've two pups and a kitty, all three of which are close to me, but I connect more with my dogs. In my house I look after the dogs the most in that I feed, walk, and play with them daily, so they have an unconditional love for me that's easy to reciprocate. Dogs have been a part of my life as far back as I remember. I mean that literally since my first memory was getting my dog Jasmin for my second birthday.

butthead aka 216 08-01-2013 10:42 AM

cat people seem more reclusive to me

one of my clients has 2 cats and 2 dogs. 2 of the most beautiful dogs ive ever seen. one is a st bernard mixed with a....pitbull i think?? it has such an interesting look. and the other is a female german shepherd.

my parents just got a 3rd dog. i encouraged them because since our other dog died 2 years ago their other 2 dogs kind of shut down. they dont want to play as much and just seem like they never wanna do anything and they arent old enough to just wana lay around constantly. so they got a blakc lab and its awesome. reminds me of bein young and my grandma havin a black lab i always played with.

Aww yeah I know, dogs who are aggressive are usually mistreated and haven't been socialised much through their life (which can lead them to attack other dogs because they don't know how to react). My friend has a big ass rottweiler and he is a big bit of a boy, he ofcourse as an intimidating look because his head is bigger than any rott I've seen but he's the biggest baby he actually pisses when he see's me he gets that excited haha!

Is there nothing you can do to like stop this guy? That's completely unfair for him to tar all barking dogs with one brush. Hell I can't get Violet to shut up sometimes when she's out walking or hears a noise around the house. I ****ing hate ignorant pigs like that. He's probably on a power trip and simply doesn't like the breed. Arsehole.

That's awesome Ped, I wish I could do something like this, it would be so rewarding but with my dog around I would be scared the cats would bully her or something haha. She's really a doormat to pretty much all other animals haha.

Yeah it's usually the kind of people that want to own pitballs for a kind of image are dickheads and they don't look after the dogs properly which makes them aggressive :( It's sad.

Ultimately all dogs are instinctive animals who could lash out at certain events and react to certain things, responsible pet ownership is what it is all about.

IvanMC 08-10-2013 06:10 PM

I believe that people (in general) tend to prefer a pooch to a kitten. There are very few of them who are highly keen on cats but dislike dogs. Personally, I really like both; got hold of a street cat 13 years ago when he was tiny and now he's still young and undoubtely one of the happiest creatures on Earth. No particular difference in behaviour in my opinion...

I used to volunteer at a shelter (but I only worked with dogs because I'm allergic to cats) and I fostered one in my home... I ended up loving him so much that I adopted him. So be warned... by the end of your working shelter stint you will likely have a new pet! :)

IvanMC 08-11-2013 01:33 AM

Congratulations, Astronomer! I volunteer at a shelter myself. The teeming city is crammed with street dogs struggling for survival day in day out. I do look up to those who give them a big hand. A pooch is a wondrous creature.

Easily solved, would you rather clean out a kitty litter box or curb your dog by picking up poopy with a plastic bag.

Mr. Charlie 10-17-2013 06:02 PM

I like both cats and dogs. Dogs are loyal and loving, cats are mysterious and independent. All fine qualities.

Isbjørn 10-18-2013 08:21 AM

I prefer dogs, since dogs are always happy while cats are trying to be cool. Poseurs.
Also, dog people go outside, while cat people are on the internet.

Mr. Charlie 10-18-2013 10:26 AM

All generalisations are false. Including this one.

butthead aka 216 10-18-2013 10:30 AM

Dogs are the best and cats are not. More variety in digs and they can fo more things. Just better. Dog pp rule

Cuthbert 10-18-2013 10:56 AM

I like both tbh.

I think cats can be loyal also. My cat is always happy to see me, he tried to follow me out the other day and kept meowing, I didn't want him to cos I didn't want him to walk in the road and get hit by a car.

I felt bad all day then gave him a hug when I got in.

Not really, cats can vary widely, my cat acts like a dog and is fiercely loyal to me, but I raised/bottlefed him so I think he may think hes a human being.

Cuthbert 10-18-2013 11:23 AM

Also my dog would attack if you tried to cuddle him, so wasn't really very loving.
