I see soccer players fall to the ground like newborn deer every 30 seconds in fake pain/agony, but I also see hockey players literally fight each other until their fingers are broken and their faces are bloody yet still find ways to stay on their feet, which consequently are balancing on two pieces of sharpened fucking metal. Quit dreaming. Being able to quickly transition from going 20 miles an hour forward to 20 miles an hour backwards in <30 seconds isn't something any soccer player could do if they tried.

This just proves that hockey players are hard nuts and not sissies like soccer players.:D

By and large the debate concerning more skill to master a particular sport over another is not really that valid either. To be good at any sport, it takes hours upon hours of daily dedication to it master anyway whether it be football or hockey. Even a natural action like running, takes years to reach a supreme level as well.

Admittedly though, American footballers must be the most admirable athletes around. They spend hours trying to run a few yards with a ball, hugging their companions whilst looking mean in their body armour, and then using their brains to work out the senseless stats system. I just don't know why they don't play rugby instead, now that's a real man's sport...........

Yeah, rugby is such a real man's sport that they can't even spear tackle each other. GTFO

Also American Football started out as rugby but they changed it because scrumming is an inconsistent crapshoot and better rules were made.

Fluffy's point is that if only one country loves a sport then it must be bad because of it. So that's why I made my statement to just turn around what he was saying. I didn't say it just to boast and be like FUCK YEAH AMERICA!

I've been accused of arguing too strongly and not letting things go, so I'm letting this one go. I think you may be right but I have other things to say, but rather than go round and round I'll just concede the point and accept I may have misunderstood. It's only sport after all, no point getting bent out of shape about it. But see below...

Also, I didn't say violence in the game or by the players is a good thing. I was following up Goofle's point of the fans as he says being "bat **** mental" aka passionate. Those same passionate fans are the ones that end up fighting and causing violence over the sport not that the players fighting are what makes it good. You did misunderstand what I said. I just noticed you even quoted me and still didn't read it correctly. Did you not see that I mentioned Goofle's name in that quote meaning that it was something HE STATED and not an opinion of my own.
The problem here is you are equating Goofle's description of "bat shit mental" fans with violence. This is not the case. He's talking about those who paint their team's colours on their body, dress in mad outfits, cheer every pass, go mad when a goal is scored or roar at the ref when a bad decision is made. He is NOT talking about people throwing things, using racial slurs, starting fights, setting off flares and generally trying to ruin the game. That is NOT bat shit mental, that's just plain mental.

You can enjoy the game without getting violent. As BD says, it's called passion. It does not follow that because you're a rabid fan that you will kick someone's teeth in or stick a knife in someone, and this is the distinction you're failing to make/understand, which seems to be leading you to the belief that Goof was talking about violent fans. He wasn't, just passionate ones.

You just defined "passion" right there ^^, so that is exactly what was being discussed.

No, I was talking about the result of a single point, not the emotion/passion fans have for their teams. Obviously if you support a team of any kind on a week to week basis and you invest a lot of your time into them you will have the same level of passion for them. It would be ridiculous for me to make out as though football fans are somehow more invested in their chosen sport.

I personally think a "goal" in football receives a larger reaction from the crowd than any single point scored in other sports on average. Though, as I said before, the "match winning" point is comparable in any sport where large crowds are involved.

Well I will chalk that up to cross the pond miscommunication of terms then.

Those same attributes you describe happen with fans of almost every sport though. I don't see why he feels that only football fans are more passionate than fans of every other sports. They all go to those lengths for their local teams. Painting their faces, screaming , etc.

One of the good things about living in Britain is American football is never mentioned on the tv or the radio or the newspapers, and its never brought up in conversation anywhere by anyone ever.

Trollheart 10-27-2013 08:10 AM

Well actually that's not true. Channel 4 go all out for it, although usually admittedly only the Superbowl, and MOTD mention it when it's on. But generally, no, it's not given as much airtime as soccer, tennis, snooker, F1 or a million other sports.

Serious question for you Americans: are there no goalkeepers in AF? Seems all the guy has to do is run down towards the touchline(?) with the ball, fight off those trying to stop him and cross it. Is there nobody specifically assigned to stopping him in the same was as there is with football, hockey, hurling and so on?

Janszoon 10-27-2013 08:13 AM

American football is mindnumbingly boring. European football is mindnumbingly boring. The end.
