Things that make you feel old

Just spoken to one of my sister's carers who didn't know what "Gone with the wind was" and had never heard of "Casablanca"! Oh man I feel old! What sort of things make you feel old when you hear them, assuming you're not young, and if you are, **** ya! :D

LoathsomePete 04-07-2014 11:12 AM

Seeing Twitter-based things get turned into movies/tv shows, like Shit My Dad Says and That Awkward Moment.

That kind of thing really seems to turn me into this

Friends dying.

Waking up, and not being able to stand up straight, or even walk without snap crackle popping.

Having to use "Readers". I've always had perfect vision. Not anymore.

Favorite songs that I heard when they first came out are now on the "Classic Rock" stations.

There's more, but my memory is fading.

Being able to remember when Michael Owen came on the scene and he's now retired.

i was like, "Johnny 5? Johnny 5 alive? anyone?"

But nope, they didn't get it.

Oh crap I remember that too! "This promising sixteen-year old..." :banghead: AND Beckham! And seeing Rooney's debut for Everton...

And do you remember when they used to call Ryan Giggs the youngster?

OW! My back just popped! Where's my walking frame? Someone get me an osteopath!

Seeing a paper marking the 20 year anniversary of the (mysterious) death of Kurt Cobain - that made me feel old.

Papyrus is about 5000-7000 years old, Pangea is 300 million years old

Realizing that you're 23, can't drive, and Mac Demarco is already more of a musician than you, and is the same age...

Paul Smeenus 04-07-2014 08:05 PM

^ I started driving at age 52

YorkeDaddy 04-07-2014 08:14 PM

I started driving at age 16.

Janszoon 04-07-2014 08:38 PM

If I had had a baby the year I started driving, they'd be old enough to buy alcohol right now.

Black Francis 04-07-2014 09:44 PM

Guess we talking about driving now,

i started driving when i was 25 i think, thought it would be harder to learn but it was easy.

a yr later i crashed my car into a fence.

What a cryptic way of saying your old.

Psy-Fi 04-07-2014 10:09 PM

Knowing what a rotary dial telephone is and knowing how to use one.

When you realize your arms are no longer long enough for you to be able to read most books and restaurant menus without a pair of reading glasses.

When you think back on some memorable events from your 30's and 20's, that seem like they happened 6 or 7 or 8 years ago, and you realize they actually happened two to three times longer ago than you first thought.

When you make a pop culture reference to someone in their teens or twenties and they have no idea what you're talking about.

Armitis affects those over the age of 40 I heard.

Same. I was having a conversation with one of my customers (a senior citizen) the other day about how people my age (mid 20s) are so hooked on technology, so connected to everyone and everything, all the time, and we both agreed that it's strange, unnecessary, and slightly horrifying.

I laughed so hard when I saw this. (Then I had to explain it to Ki.)

uh.

stuff that makes me feel old (part 1, pocket edition) -
  • Pretty much my entire front-end staff at work (and the fact that I take the youngest ones under my wing because they're practically overgrown children)
  • The fact that you can't say "here's a dime; call someone who cares" anymore, because nobody would understand you/if pay phones still exist somewhere, they're probably super expensive now.
  • The fact that I enjoy drinking but I don't want to get drunk.
  • My little sister (who I practically raised myself) is 20 years old. TWENTY. WHAT THE HELL.
  • The fact that my significant other is a couple years younger than me, and I consider him somewhat sheltered in contrast to all the adventures I've had in the past 10 years. (But it makes me happy that I can teach him necessary things about being an adult.)

No, it's a "thing that makes me feel old". Seeing a comment about driving made me realize it's been 21 years since I got my license, which is the drinking age here.

i remember those, i kinda miss them actually i liked the sound the little number wheel made.

plus back then you had to memorise somebody's phone, nowadays if i lose my cellphone i can't call most of my friends cause i don't remember their number!

The Batlord 04-08-2014 11:55 AM

You know how camera work and picture quality all kind of look the same for whatever decade they're in so you can pretty much date any TV show/movie you watch just by how it looks? It makes me feel old when I realize that I remember a time when TV looked different.

That's just not being cultured or not that into movies in general.

Not so much about being old.

I am glad that I don't have to waste space remember random people's numbers. Also back in those days people just ended up either using a phone book or having your own personal phone book that you wrote their numbers down in. You didn't have to remember them back then either.

James 04-08-2014 12:23 PM

Yeah, Casablanca is one of my favourite movies. It's the same concept as music - do you feel old when people say they haven't heard of say Neil Young? They're just not into music.

Black Francis 04-08-2014 12:28 PM

@Dj

True but it was easier to remember their phone number cause you had to dial it all the time.

i still remember the phone number of the house i grew up in.

I know kids these days probably don't even think about it, but I still feel goofy having to look into my phone to find my own number. How on Earth can I not remember my own phone number?

Xurtio 04-08-2014 12:33 PM

Nirvana and Metallica playing on classic rock stations.

I'm glad that I don't have to dedicate memory to those numbers though and can focus on other things. I see it as an improvement.

lol I hate that when someone asks for my own number. It does take me short while to retrieve it.

At this pace we'll end living in the future portrayed by idiocracy.

Yes! This is what I was going to say. I often listen to classic rock stations and it is incredibly scary hearing songs from my old childhood or teenagehood on there...

Xurtio 04-08-2014 09:47 PM

Your title reminds me of back when Sagan, Feynman, deGrasse Tyson, and Nye were in a band together:

Trollheart 04-09-2014 05:35 PM

Um, Batlord could be right. She apparently now has never heard of a concentration camp. :shycouch: She's 22 before anyone asks.

:banghead:

How can anyone, of any age, not know about concentration camps? Wish we didn't have to but come on: were all those lives lost in vain? If we don't remember, if we're not taught these things, you know what can happen...

Xurtio 04-09-2014 05:38 PM

Is that where we take kids to learn how to focus their attention really well?
