Just joined the site. Found this thread (and the Anti-Drug thread) after I had set the playlist for my Saturday night live stream Runka Punka Go Go on Rumble Channel yusipka. Tomorrow night's episode is "Songs About Drugs." Wish I had seen this before. Anyway, I will be using this site to help me with my research for future episodes going forward. Welcome to MB! Congrats on living in an area famous for its natural beauty.

I posted another Stranglers song in the parallel thread, on anti-drug songs, and wondered about Golden Brown. Definitely not an anti-drugs song, certainly much closer to pro-drugs than anti-drugs. But also, it's too enigmatic to be explicitly pro-anything.

The name of another song in your list reminded me of one of the ultimate pro-drugs anthems

jadis: Your line "But also, it's too enigmatic to be explicitly pro-anything" captures it quite well, at least if I go by the junkies I have known. There's a vacancy in a junkie's eyes that expresses the sentiment that they are almost beyond caring about anything. I think that's what makes "Golden Brown" such a great tune. It captures that... I don't know what to call it, the shrug of existence? quite well, even as it trips along in its odd meter. BTW, thanks for the Queens of the Stone Age posting. New to me. Liked it.
