Best Band Or Artist In The Past 5 Years

Do not be too quick to post here folk's, there are some rules and guidelines here. The question to be more clear is which band or artist which has appeared in the last 5 years has made the most significant impact on the face of modern music as we know it. Do not simply type in the band name, I need you to CONVINCE me and anyone else on this forum. I will stay Switzerland for now because I really haven't thought of my answer.

Perhaps one of you can convince me into my answer

Sneer 12-12-2005 11:29 AM

since 2000 i dont think anyone can really argue with the white stripes? nobody has been as original, innovative or diverse.
3 quality albums and one above average album isnt bad.

deadkennedysmeetstheclash 12-12-2005 12:06 PM

^^ **** Off!! Original? if you call averrage lyrics, deep purple like power chord songs and drumming that even def leppards one armed drummer could do blindfolded than yeah they're original or innovative or diverse. 3 ****ty albums more like.

Great new bands?? American hi-fi, Seether, Hot Hot Heat, Fozzy, Reel Big Fish..

Who's the best?? i don't know..I think that you can't really decide.

I think comemrically someone liek Coldplay have relaly become the big band in teh past few years. However bands like babyshambles and Kaiser Cheifs are also pretty big right now (unfortunatky)

average lyrics? take time out to actually listen to them before running your mouth off. the simplicity of their music is their strength.
give me one other band of the past 40 years who are like the white stripes? american hi-fi, HHH, seether? your joking yeah? talk about generic. and coldplay or babyshambles? best band of the last 5 years? fuck off.

You are mostly dead on, except for Franz Ferdinand, which i consider one of the most godawful bands in recent years...My money is on.....

Mars Volta, Radiohead, White Stripes, Muse, Coldplay, Sigur Ros, Incubus,
Gorlliaz, The Strokes, Tool, Beck, Coheed And Cambria.

Sneer 12-12-2005 01:40 PM

id add QOTSA, elbow, libertines (british music scene wise anyway) and bright eyes (love him or hate him- hes released a couple of very competent albums in 5 years) into the mix aswell.

adidasss 12-12-2005 01:43 PM

shit, the queens, i can't believe i forgot about them.....definetly....

Sneer 12-12-2005 01:50 PM

a lot of people seem to overlook queens. but the simple truth is America hasnt produced a band as good as this since sliced bread.

right-track 12-12-2005 02:07 PM

Who are 'Sliced Bread' are they any good?
What genre are they?

I'll go with The White Stripes.

Sneer 12-12-2005 02:09 PM

hehe. sliced bread are post-rock emocore psychedelic garage rock. and their from albania. WELL GOOD

I've never heard anything of theirs being as groundshakingly new and innovative as everyone makes out. Yeah, ok, there's a few stand out tracks. Everyone likes Go With The Flow and First It Giveth, I get it. But, stuff like Little Sister just makes me think "why this band"..

I hope its not just you , they're brilliant. Apart from Absolution so much, thats my least favourite of theirs.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 12-12-2005 03:00 PM

Circle Takes the Square is brilliant. Much better than anything else in the past 5 years.

sleepy jack 12-12-2005 03:19 PM

Blood Brothers - They have a pretty rare dual vocals thing and out of the stuff im into the past 5 years hasn't had anything paticularly unique except for a few and the blood brothers are among the uniqueness. It hasn't changed the face of modern music but its diffrent.

shiftael 12-12-2005 04:15 PM

I'm beginnign to sound lieka broken record but The Dears, Interpol and I'll add another band, the Drive By Truckers..
every band is great in their own way, DBT are incredibly, incerdibly awesome live that I've gotten to see, I'v e heard some Interpol live stuff they sound liek they'd be great live, and The Dears, they just grow on you and keep growing, so much thought into their latest piece

I am behind you 100% on the Drive by Truckers however they aren't commercially viable and don't support any sort of signature sound. What I am getting at in a roundabout way is a band that will remain popular and stand the test of time for the next 15-20 years.

I still have not made my decision

Obviously, I don't PERSONALLy belive that Coldplay or Babyshambles or kasier cheifs ar ethe best band of the past 5 years, but COMMERCAILLY they are. You can't argue with album sales and figures. Band in teh last 40 eyar slike the white stripes???? The reason there is no other like them is because they're ****. Ni the simplicity is the fact that they're no talented losers. Name me one good lyrical song by teh white stripes, I dare you.. Okay, name a band like Hot Hot heat. Okay so Seether, and american hi-fi are generic but they're talanted. More talnted than the White Stripes at any rate. And thinkign muse are head and shoulders above everyone is why you are an idiot my friend. Muse are good but they'r enot THAT good.

If i started a band mostly consisting of pre schoolers, we would still be better than Seether.

Fell In Love With A Girl has some clever lyrics, among others...Its not really the lyrics that make The White Stripes great anyway, their like AC/DC...They are more about the music than the message.

that's yet another reason they're great, they play their own style, which is a mixture of all great styles, yet they still have their own distinct ssound at the same time.
Lucky enough to finally have beeen able to see them live on this recent tour and anotehr great sign of a good band they'er as good live as studio they played must've been 3 hours and they looke dlike they literally coudl've kept going for another whole set.
One ex co-worker put it in great words, 'They like to play as much as they like to get paid' I defintiely believed that when I saw them..

pastor of muppets 12-13-2005 11:19 PM

i like muse, i really like absolution and showbiz as well as some of origins....
in terms of aussie music, i really like the impact eskimo joe has made....

MURDER JUNKIE 12-13-2005 11:22 PM

as musicians however they are too good. They have 3 different songwriters, which usually doesn't support longevity in any band. I am very jealous you got to see them however, they don't play too many Canadian dates

good lyrical songs? try one more cup of coffee, offend in every way, im finding it harder to be a gentleman, we're going to be freinds, little room (for a song 50 seconds long the lyrical content is a perfect summary of the stripes rise) and i fought piranhas. all have great lyrics. oh and little acorns. for just two people the music they produce is quite remarkable. and they are very very infulential- spawning a new-wave of two piece bands such as DFA' 79, the black keys, dresden dolls, viva voce and idiot pilot to name a few. for "no talented losers" they've done pretty well for themselves havent they? im not going to question your tastes because that would be stooping to your neanderthal, unfathomably low level.
However...one quip...seether talented? you've had your head too far up your arse for far too long. you call me an idiot when you cannot even spell "talented".

And so onto the Queens, granted minus olivieri they've lost a lot of the pinasche that in my opinion made them great. but their three albums prior to that bought desert, sleaze rock to the mainstream. three of the best albums for purely for their content for the past 5 years? can anyone really question that? and live they are unbelievable.

franscar 12-14-2005 11:29 AM

I've seen QOTSA live three times and they've always been crap. Whack the bass up so high nobody can hear the fact that Homme can't sing live. I was with quite a short girl who couldn't see the stage for one of the gigs, and she didn't even notice Mark Lanegan come on the sound was so appalling.

Sneer 12-14-2005 11:40 AM

when i saw them they were phenomenal. but then ive heard a lot of people say bloody blink 182 are great live and when i saw em they were diabolical. so i know where your coming from.

:yeah: :yeah: :yeah:

JohnnyK 12-14-2005 02:40 PM

Tool - They have an extremely unique sound. Maynard James Keenan is a great lyricist and an even better singer. Adam Jones isn't very technical but writes riffs that fit the music perfectly.

Porcupine Tree - If I had to pick out who I thought most related to a modern day Pink Floyd, than PT would be it. Steven Wilson is an amazing singer and songwriter. His voice sort of lulls you into space in a Gilmour-esque fashion. They are a very diverse band and one that I think will be remembered a long way down the road.

sleepy jack 12-14-2005 02:43 PM

Im nearly 100% sure Tool have been around for more then 5 years..Same with porcupine tree.

shiftael 12-14-2005 03:02 PM

ok slightly confuzzled does it have to be a band that's only -existed- 5 years or a band that's personally impressed oneself in the past 5...? sorry for not understanding..

sleepy jack 12-14-2005 06:40 PM

Only existed for 5 years.

That contradicts the thread title. "best band or artist in the past 5 years".

Tool and Porcupine Tree have both been around since the 90s...But they made some quality music in the 00s as well....Thats how i looked at it, what bands have been making the best music for the past 5 years.

sleepy jack 12-14-2005 08:09 PM

I made a thread titled jethro tull it had nothing to do with jethro tull it depends on what the first post says.

"Do not be too quick to post here folk's, there are some rules and guidelines here. The question to be more clear is which band or artist which has appeared in the last 5 years."

Oooooooooohh.

The Mars Volta. :hphones:

shiftael 12-14-2005 08:27 PM

well crap, I think that negates my choices.. heck I think even Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been around more then 5 years..

sleepy jack 12-14-2005 08:28 PM

Theirs a diffirence between appears and been around.
We don't know when a band started in a garage, so just go by the debut album date.

Yeah sorry I was a little confused with the thread. Anyway, since Tool and PT won't work, I'll go with The Mars Volta.

hookers with machineguns 12-15-2005 11:26 PM

The Faint
The Arcade Fire
The Postal Service
The Mars Volta
The Decemberists

All (with the exception of the Decemberists) have drawn mainstream attention to indie and alternative music, not to mention, have been able to take advantage of bits and pieces of the 1980s new wave, synth pop, and/or progressive movements, and bring it back to life for the 21st century.
