Default What has the world come to?!

I was just wondering about other people's views on the world of music today. People complain about how it has gotten worse, and certain bands are killing certain genres. I just thought considering this type of conversation gets brought up in a lot of threads then maybe there should be an actual thread for it, instead of it ruining other threads. So then, what do you think of the state of music in the world today? Is it better? Is it worse? Is it dead?

The future is incredibly bright. Mass media like MTV and terrestrial TV channels are facing competition from the internet and its ability to allow bands from right across the world access to a gigantic pool of listeners, capable of judging for themselves what they do and don't want to listen to.

Of course the major record companies will respond in an attempt to protect their own interests, but by then the next wave of innovation will be under way.

Genres are there to be killed

Can you honestly say you want another 10 years of substandard grunge bands.
There`s only so much originality you can milk out of one genre of music.

I tend to find most of my favourite bands take inspiration from different genres & create something unique from them. After all , if you like Nirvana why on earth would you want to listen to about 20 poor imitations.

I think it is worse, but not dead. The bands from that past that are still strugglin to stay alive, like the Rolling Stones and Robert Plant, are getting pretty bad, and the new bands that are emerging are pretty bad for the most part IMO. I'm not much for punk rock, so none of those bands excite me much. Metal nowadays just annoys the hell outta me, I can't stand the screaming and the overall noise. It seems to me that nowadays rock music doesnt typically have an intro that lasts more than about 8 seconds, and there is rarely a solo, and if so its maybe about 4 or 5 seconds long in between the chorus and the next verse. Too much of the music sounds the same to me, it seems that everyone is sort of copying each other's sound to be more successful, bands used to be much more diverse and unique IMO, and I think that music over the years has lost that quality. I think there might be a correlation between the creativity and talent going down and the drug use going down since the 60s and 70s, there's no way of really denying that I guess. There are some groups out there trying to do their own thing still, and I think that's neat. I happen to really like Audioslave, they have cool openings, kick ass vocals, wicked guitar work, and holy **** solos too. They are what IMO a true rock band should be, and they are one of the only left around. I like tool, but they aren't doing much these days really, and APC falls far short of Tool IMO, especially just recently with their newest album. There's other bands that are new that I like, Modest Mouse and 311, but the same sort of goes for those groups I like their earlier stuff better than the latter. I don't like rap, which is a newer genre that has emerged, so that doesn't help things IMO, I don't find it to be an acceptable form of music, but that's just me please don't murder me over this forum for my opinion. All in all, I think music has hit a low, but that just means it can only go up from here. I think its cool to see more and more younger people getting into older rock music, that only goes to show that music has a good chance of going back into the state it was 30+ years ago. Also you may be able to make a relation between Vietnam and the war we are currently fighting, and wars usually produce strong protest music, which represents much of the older music of the time period I like the most.

I think the state of music is both good and bad. It's bad that some good bands aren't getting airplay simply because they aren't rap, and it's bad that MTV and other channels are mostly blind to talent. MTV2 had an Indie night recently and practically every band they played on there weren't Indie. Awards shows are getting worse and worse-I mean, should Black Eyed Peas really be one of the songs of the year? And the cheesy Pop song is still running wild over the charts. Then there are the good things. Like you said, sites like iTunes are outrunning actually CD sales, and this means that the threat of Piracy ruining the Music industry is now looking to be stopped. I mean, why risk being fined thousands when you can download a song for 79p? Then there are the recent rising of artists, and good ones at that. There has been a real showcase of talent this year, with lots of fantastic albums being released. Also, like last year, it has been a gangsters paradise, with old favourites and new rising stars appearing. Overall, the music industry has seen better years, but this has been the best it has been for a very long time.

Oh dear , rap is new? last I checked it had been around for 25+ years

The reason there is 'no good music' is because you`re not open to it.You want all bands to sound like they did 30 years ago , and that isn`t going to happen.I notice you mention Audioslave as a new band you like , is it a coincidence perhaps they sound like a Led Zeppelin tribute band?

I don`t mean to have a go at you but if there`s one thing that really pisses me off is people like yourself who complain there`s no good new music when the best example you can give of a new band is a band made up of people who have been recording music for 15/20 years and who hold up Led Zeppelin as the holy grail in music.

Today music is free of genres , people take inspiration from rock , jazz , blues , country , electronica , soul , funk , punk , folk and just about everything in a way that never happened in the past , open your mind & take advantage of that . Not all of us want the planet overrun by blues rock dinosaurs.

I said newER, not new for starters. In the grand scheme of things, rap is the newest major genre of music, and just recently in the past 10 years I would say it has became immensely popular. I don't remember seeing white kids that dressed as though they were black and used slang words that black people came up with when I was younger, but nowadays that type of thing is running rampid. I am in no means racist, theere are some great black groups/artists from the past that I love immensely, and jazz would be nothing without blacks. When you look at rock, pop, and county they have all 3 been around much longer than rap, hence me saying it was a newer genre. Next point, Audioslave has not been around 15-20 years. Soundgarden started 20 years ago, Rage not as long ago but close, but those 2 bands are not Audioslave now are they? I would say they are quite a new band, they have only released 2 albums, barely, and I think they are a rockin good band compared to everything else out there. I'm sorry I like them. Modest mouse is in no way influenced by blues rock or Zeppelin for that matter, I just think they have a neat unique sound, and really good lyrics and concepts that you just don't find in most modern bands. It's not that I don't listen to modern music, I have to listen to the new stuff all the time at work, and even outside of that my own girlfriend is a huge fan of the Killers of all groups, so I am more than familiar with modern music, I just happen to not like it much at all. And off topic I know but if I hear wake me up before september ends again, I am going to freak out. It really isnt a horrible song compared to other stuff out there IMO, but the problem is that when a decent song comes out nowadays, everyone goes, oooohhh there's an opportunity to make some $$$ lets play the freakin **** outta it until everyone's ears bleed until the next hit song comes out, then everyone can sort of forget about that song except for maybe the real fans of the band; *cough* audioslave's be yourself *cough*

Rap isn't even newER. It's been out for ages. Just because you don't get white people dressed as black people doesn't make the genre not popular. Run DMC has been out for ages, so has Dr. Dre. It's not like it's sneeked up on us. It's been there for agES.

25 years is not that "newer". 25 years is a quarter of a century. And there are genres that have sprung up after rap.
