Yeah when you go to a show alone you can focus 100% on the music, rather than worrying if the person that' with you is enjoying it, wondering how they're hearing songs versus how you're hearing them, having to say "WHAT?!" a few times when they try to tell you something, etc.

I've never gone to a movie alone though. But I would...if movies didn't cost so damn much these days. Netflix for me thank you very much.

I never go to shows alone. Theres a few times i wish i had. There was one Hope of the States gig i was going to with a mate, we were just gonna pay on the door rather than get tickets and he dropped me in it at the last minute and so i didnt end up going. They split up not long after that.

I might go to Sunn O))) in December alone if no one else is going. I really dont want to miss that.

Still trying to decide about going to Venetian Snares and Pinback next week, Monday and Tuesday. Tons of weeknight gigs lately, it really sucks. I'm undecided because I got unbelievably trashed after Wednesday's Skinny Puppy gig. Maybe I can just tell myself not to drink. But I find it hard to go to a gig alone and not consume social lubricant.

Both very good points. They are one of my favorite bands so it will be nice to just get up front, surround myself, and not have to think about anything else.

I go to movies alone pretty often and it's fine because it's not like I chit-chat with people during the movie anyway. Music is a little different for me though because it's more of a social experience. I've been to a couple shows alone and it's fine I guess but with no one to talk to in between sets I usually end up drinking a lot more and sometimes it effects my enjoyment of the band, as was the case when I went to see the Swingin' Utters by myself earlier this year.

Yeah I totally understand that too, especially about the drinking. I tend to overdo it in an effort to feel more comfortable, and it does suck during sets or while waiting for the band to play.

Regarding the enjoyment, I think you're right too. I must have been fooling myself when I said that. I saw Skinny Puppy alone last Wednesday, while on the last two tours I was with my best friend. I enjoyed the show, but it wasn't "fun" like it was with my buddy. I stayed back rather than trying to get up front and getting all crazy. I missed him.

I guess when I made that comment I was thinking about going to shows with people that aren't as into the band as you are. So it induces a bit of anxiety about whether they're enjoying it and feeling it as much as you are. But when you're with someone that's as much a fan as you are, good times for sure.

Devin Townsend is playing in San Francisco on Jan. 18th 2010 and I'm contemplating going. I haven't seen him live since 2006 during Strapping Young Lad's last tour before they broke up so it'd be nice to see him play again. However San Francisco is a good four hours away so it'd be more than a day trip which makes my wallet cringe.
