It's even less complicated than their debut, but isn't that their goal? The ultimate stripped down sound? I don't think the experimental edge pushed aside the music, White Light/White Heat is a great tune and that riff in Sister Ray...

I'm not sure; I think that a stripped down sound would involve little more than a vocal and acoustic guitar...after all, Sister Ray has the organ and the distortion.

My problem with WL/WH is that there's some filler (Lady Godiva, Here She Comes Now) and it seems too self-consciously experimental. On the debut, everything sounded relatively natural. On WL/WH, it sounds like they were just trying to confuse people and piss them off.

By stripped down I mean ever more minimal musically.

Really? Those are some of the best songs not only on the album but out of all the Velvets songs.

i happen to dig Lady Godiva, but nothing will top the VU&Nico, i genuinely think that is the album that changed my whole perception of what music should be and do

I think if White Light/White Heat had been released with the first track of MMM tacked on to the end it could have been the ultimate album.

Hmmmm.... has anybody heard the album Squeeze? I just found out last night that they had a fifth album, only without any of the original members....

Well, I do like Here She Comes Now, far more than anything on the next two albums, but it's pretty negligible compared to I Heard Her Call My Name.

Best name to write a song about?
Yes.

I had to bump this.

I recently discovered The Velvet Underground (a few months ago). I was familiar with the name, but had no idea what they sounded like.
I got Velvet Underground & Nico first (as does everyone i think, and i really loved Sunday Morning, Venus in Furs and Heroin on the first listen. There's something about the whole ambience Venus in Furs creates that's decandence and lust and desire and deviance in person.
And I think Heroin is a song that's really moved by it's lyrics, i love how it's very slow and mellow at times, and then speeds up (like Lou Reed shot up) and gets freaking manic. The end with all the distortion is also brilliant...ah, "i guess i just don't know".
Sunday Morning is just pretty good, nothing to say about that...
More recently i gave a listen to White Light/Heat, and i really liked the opening track and The Gift. I mean...It's about a bloke that decided he'd mail himself to his ex-girlfriend(?), and the got his head cut open...i don't know what to call this..."childish horror?". I don't know, i just really like it.
This seems like a gem of a band, they were definitely ahead of their time, and i feel they pioneered the whole noise-oriented music scene that came years later.
