Canada - Besides putting out a ton of great Indie Rock bands, Canada has Constellation Records. 'Nuff said.
So a selection of sh*tty overproduced crap is enough to write off all the amazing bands that have come out of canada, yet all the insanely uninspired sh*t that comes out of the US is just not mentioned at all?

Wait, what? I'm saying I like Canada, that's why it's #1, obviously.

jibber 03-14-2006 07:28 PM

exactly, so why mention all of the uninspired canadian sh*t?

MURDER JUNKIE 03-14-2006 09:47 PM

I will attest that Canadian music sucks, minus Neil Young who hasn't lived in Canada for years

bungalow 03-14-2006 09:48 PM

Dude, Godspeed You Black Emperor! is from Canada.
Therefore, Canadian music does not suck.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-14-2006 09:49 PM

2 bands don`t make a country great at music , look at the crap thats come from there before that.

bungalow 03-14-2006 09:50 PM

Trust me, they make up for every ****e band from Canada.
Plus, there are actually a million and one great Indie bands outta Canada today

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-14-2006 09:52 PM

Most of them sound the same to me , seems to either be post rock or Arcade Fire/Talking Heads lite

bungalow 03-14-2006 09:53 PM

Well, if you're into Post Rock, and Arcade Fire/Talking Heads lite, then Canada would be a pretty promising music scene for you. :P

MURDER JUNKIE 03-14-2006 09:55 PM

Arcade Fire eat c0ck

it's a fact

Damn I thought you were going to start argueing then & list a load of bands that don`t.

Would have saved me the effort of finding them myself

bungalow 03-14-2006 09:58 PM

Rufus Waignwright
Stars
New Pornographers
Feist
Wolf Parade
The Unicorns
Broken Social Scene

MURDER JUNKIE 03-14-2006 09:59 PM

The only Canadian band I have ever liked in 15 years is SNFU

Chi Pig Ugly should be our Prime Minister

Rufus is from New York.

bungalow 03-14-2006 10:03 PM

He was born in New York, but I'm pretty sure he lived(s) in Canada most of his life.

I'm not letting those Canadians steal him, he's one of us!

bungalow 03-14-2006 10:13 PM

Those damn Canadians steal everything.

MURDER JUNKIE 03-14-2006 10:18 PM

um........didn't you Americans steal your own country??

TrampInaTux 03-15-2006 01:22 AM

Okay then, let's change this to a global thing. I made it only Brits v Yanks because I thought that it was a bigger issue without a load of unknown, ultra-foreign bands floating around. I didn't want that basically because I don't listen to anything outside of Great Britain and the USA. But if you lot want it changed, then go ahead. So people, who makes the better music? The Brits, Yanks, Canadians, Croatians, French, Norweigans, Italians, Germans, Spanish, Portugese.......

Merkaba 03-15-2006 02:29 AM

Your thread is just fine the way it is hobojesus.

boo boo 03-15-2006 02:35 AM

Im from Tennessee, which for Beale Street, The Grand Ole Opry and Sun Records alone is far superior to any other US state and every nation in terms of musical greatness, we have rock n roll, blues, country and bluegrass, what do you german fockers have?...polka and techno?...So all of you, bow down before me, for i am your superior master.

We also have a lot of great rock bands to our credit, like Big Star and uh.......uh......Well, thats all we need, because Big Star rules. =D

boo boo 03-15-2006 02:54 AM

Anyway, Iceland deserves a mention for Bjork and Sigur Ros alone, both of whom i am obsessed with at the moment.

Though i just got into Ros a couple of months ago, i have been into Bjork for a very long time.

It doesn't matter if they're making good music now, the point is that they're British and they have made good music in the past. And when I was on about his crackpot views, I was fighting back for him contradicting me. I was not very impressed by the way he tried to put me down like that.

I didn't actually say that they were crap, I merely stated that the can't be that popular if I've never heard of them, you know like The Beatles or Elton John (everyone's heard of them).

But why did he try to force a band name into conversation when we were having an argument??

I didn't know what the hell he was trying to tell me.

How an I contradicting myself?? I never said that a band had to be making good music now for them to matter, I said that they have made good music in the past. And I think The Prodigy are very good, even though their last major hit was probably back in 1997 with 'Breathe'.

I presume you haven't heard any Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Rush, Sheavy, or Sons Of Otis then?

MURDER JUNKIE 03-15-2006 09:22 AM

I have and none of them are anything that I would go out of my way to declare that I am Canadian because of. Sorry, there is nothing here but a vapid wasteland of sub par music

I get dissed for liking Alanis Morrisette a lot. :(

Anyway its ignorant to say any country dosent produce good music, good music is available worldwide, everybody has something to offer.

littleknowitall 03-15-2006 09:50 AM

im from wales, yes its part of britian but someones was talking bout seperate american states so i can talk about wales:) erm.....tom jones! (woo!)

Crashing Sun 03-15-2006 10:02 AM

Best Canadian band based on what I've heard is Rush. (I might listen to more Death From Above, not that I think they're contenders for such rank, but they do insterest me.)

As for the question... both countries have truly great and truly terrible bands. But Beatles, Floyd, and Stones, that's a pretty impressive line up though. Even Marley was half British. Man you Brits gets your rugby mitts into everything!

I dig Broken Social Scene.

TrampInaTux 03-15-2006 03:43 PM

I don't think we should admit Tom Jones is a part of Britain. That makes us lose something like ten points in this argument.

Personally I'd be more proud of SFA and Gorkys. Woo!

Also, this topic is rather unfair due to massive geographical/population difference!
