Brand New - Science Fiction (2017).

This is good. Real good.

God damn, it is really good. What a way to go out on, I wish more bands' final albums were this strong.

I doubt this is the end of Brand New. They might say so, but they won't stop after this I'm calling it. I'm rarely ever wrong about these things.

It took them 8 years to make this album and 11 years to send out those stupid lyric booklets. I bet it'll take them 6 or 7 years to break up.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 08-18-2017 11:21 AM

if they break up and i never get to see them live my life will forever be like getting 99% completion in a video game

451 is a **** song tho btw it kinda reminds me of a Marilyn Manson cover band

Are you drunk?

Not a bad song on the album in my opinion.

I can kind of see what you mean, a bit more scooped mids and that riff could sound very similar to "The Beautiful People". I still think it's a good song though, but I think the best is "Out of Mana"

I'm slightly on the fence with this one. Seems a little too low-key for my tastes.

I'm only up to Black Ken so far. Working my way down the list.

Last album I actually bought was Dillinger Escape Plan's Dissociation, though now I tend to listen via Apple Music.

Good album by a crazy band

The last album I bought was Deep Purple's 1993 album The Battle Rages On.... I was initially sceptical about this purchase as the resurrection of DP with Perfect Strangers had apparently taken a swift downturn towards the end of the 80s and had briefly "gone all weird" with the AOR salmon paste* effort that was Slaves and Masters So here I am thinking "They brought Gillan back for one more album, which Blackmore refers to as The Cattle Grazes On... and then Mk.II died forever?...surely it must be s***"

But actually, who the hell gets off giving this album hate? It's actually a pretty fascinating slice of the band transitioning from the heavy Mk.II to the Steve Morse era, and in all fairness, the album rocks. Okay, it may not have the same aggression and diversity of the 70s era, but from start to finish Battle is a jaunty, heavy stick of rock music from a truly professional, effortlessly talented bunch of guys.

The title track kicks the album off with some bite, and Gillan and Blackmore seem to work tightly around the melodies and riffs, with Gillan's voice sounding more comfortable in a mid-tempo and lower range than usual. 'Anya' is as close as the album comes to epic, but foreshadows the more emotional, sensitive vibes that would be continued on Purpendicular and Abandon. 'Time to Kill' is a jaunty sing a long rocker with a fun-loving keyboard solo from Lord, and it seeks to remind us that DP were as much about fun as they were heaviness. 'Ramshackle Man' (although a riff-off of 'Roadhouse Blues) and 'Nasty Piece of Work' are groovy, bluesy numbers with plenty of bite, and 'Solitaire' showcases how the band are able to turn the theme song from the X-Men cartoon series into a respectable rock song.

Does it get top marks for inventiveness? Hell no. Does it have the showiness on guitar and keyboard of earlier releases? Nope. Is it a respectable swan song with some hidden gems studded in there? For defo.

3.5*/ 5

Blackmore may hate it...but Blackmore is a bell end....so who cares what he thinks?

Got a varied bunch of things today.

CD's:

https://images.shazam.com/coverart/t...74498_s400.jpghttp://www.mysticproduction.cz/images/CD/CDafm6222.jpg
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EoVjSMnjHD.../s1600/001.jpghttp://www.chameleon.scot/wp-content...n-aberdeen.jpg
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....1qL._SS500.jpghttp://cdn-s3.allmusic.com/release-c...0000355995.jpg

I don't have any idea what's on that Renée Søndergaard EP, but it looks like it might be vocal jazz and it was nearly free. Taking a tiny chance on that one. The rest, I have good to decent reason to think I will enjoy.

LP (for the cover):

http://d2ydh70d4b5xgv.cloudfront.net...06110f6e21.jpg

Don't have a record player but I'm buying the odd LP anyway when I find a cover that I like. Baez is great and I like the 70's vibe of this cover. I intend to get the CD version sometime before Christmas, since I assume it's a Christmas album. My copy is a bit more worn than the one in the picture, plus the Vanguard label is printed over the title instead of under the picture. Cost very little, so I don't mind a few scratches so much.

Have you checked out Der Ring des Nibelungen? I don't listen to opera, but I saw all four operas on TV and it was some epic nerd ****. Also a lot of LOTR stuff going on, but I can't remember if Tolkien got anything from Wagner or they just liked the same myths.

True Neutral Crew - Soft Rules

First listen: *perplexed*
Immediate second listen: *still perplexed*

This is some weird **** dude. The best way I can describe it is that it's an oddly modernized amalgamated blend of Injury Reserve, Curse Ov Dialect, Doseone, Brockhampton, and Shabazz. Some Moor Motherhood in there too. I don't even know if I like it, which usually means that it will be a new favourite album of mine in the near future.

That's a great album. If you like that, you should checkout the split they did with The Bastard Noise, The Red List.

Virginia Astley - From Gardens Where We Feel Secure (1983)
We are now entering autumn in my neck of the woods. It's also raining outside. The only way I could possibly enjoy this album more is basking in the warm sunshine of a mid-summers day, while lying in a field and staring at the clouds. The two sides of this album are named "morning" and "afternoon" to reflect the mood of those parts of the day. This is an ambient album which is mostly piano and woodwind, but also makes great use of field recordings of birdsong, sheep, and distant church bells.

The Durutti Column - LC (1981)
The vast majority of you are well aware of the "post-punk" tag, that umbrella term which ties together a vast variety of music in the years following the demise of the original wave of punk. Despite this album being tagged as post-punk, it's as far removed from punk as an early 80's album tagged as post-punk could possibly get. What I do hear in this album however is the seeds of dream pop being planted, and faint glimpses of post-rock. The mood and atmosphere of this album, coupled with the sparse vocals, make for an immersive listen.

No I don't think she's related to Rick.
