I'll start...

"Train In Vain" - The Clash (London Calling, 1979)

This song starts with a typically solid grooving beat at the hands of Topper Headon and a jumpy two note riff courtesy of Mick Jones who wrote and sang the tune. This sets the pace for the song and is dangerously on the verge of being cheesy as the rest of it. This is a big part of its charm. The band is either ingnorant of the slight cheesiness, or they just don't care. All that aside, the rhythm is instantly gripping. the vocals are highly passionate and expressive, strained in the way that shows the man has felt what he sings about. I am a big fan of songs like this that tackle subjects that would be cause for depression with such a fun interpretation (i.e. "Run For Your Life" - The Beatles). The blissful cheeriness is contagious and never fails to put a smile on my face. The way the brightness of the music contrasts the lyrics, the song becomes about overcoming sadness and the other problems life throws your way. For me, this is the ultimate feel-good song and to answer Barry's question in High Fidelity, my favorite song to play on a monday morning.

"Pass Me By" - Insane Clown Posse from "The Great Milenko"

I love this song because it gives an idea of what Shangri-La might be like when we die. It tells of being with homies and never having to worry about money, hate, or death. It definatly is a good song.

Ever watched Backyard Wrestling? I'm sure you still wouldn't regard them as these God-like figures after you watched them pummel a guy with a shovel.

Patti Smith - Gloria (Horses)

One of those beautiful songs which will pick you up out of a bad spot and remind you everything isn't that bad. She starts singing "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine" and i'm getting shivers already. The song builds up and up, Patti sounds like the coolest person ever ("i go to this here party, and i just get bored") and then it all explodes into the refrain "Gllloooorrrrrriiiiaaaaa!!!" and its the greatest rock-gospel-whatever song ever.

Jaibi - ‘You Got Me’.

Which song do I love the most and why?
This is such a serious question, so forgive me for coming over as all serious here.

When I first heard this song my initial reaction was one of indifference, but the more I listened to it the more it became apparent ‘You Got Me’ has a depth of emotion not many records can lay claim to.

I first heard this song after buying an album called ‘Deep Soul Treasures’ and in the sleeve notes Dave Godin ( a well respected man in the Soul scene ) described this song as, “without doubt or any reservation, my favourite record of all time.”
After hearing this song many times for myself, I can easily see why.

Jaibi sings as a woman who having suffered the emotional devastation of having her heart broken,
only to come to the reluctant realisation that she has found herself “falling in love again”.
You can feel herself thinking after the suffering and pain “please God not again”.
As the song progresses, so does her acceptance of this new love.

Everything about this song has a beauty of it’s own. Not a single word wasted and the pace can only be described as majestic.
And the music, (this from a review I read); “the way the horns swell slowly and with such grace behind the melody, the way the bass starts boiling over when she sings "I try to fight this burning desire…"

Written in the 60’s, at only 2 minutes 37 seconds long, it’s beautiful, poignant and overwhelming .
It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck and gives me goosebumps…it’s the perfect song.

Anyone who claims to love music, should listen to 'You Got Me' despite your genre preferences and learn to understand this song.
Anyone who has ever had their heart broken…here’s hope.

Melvins - Honey Bucket.

Theres nothing to this three minutes except that I can safely say I'll never get sick of the musicianship.

It is raw as fuck. The vocals are a bit weird when they finally come in halfway through the song. But who cares, it is raw as fuck.

Very special song.

"Don't Pass Me By" - The Beatles (The White Album, 1968)

The drum riff that kicks this one of is unmistakable. It always makes me happy, as I realize what I'm about to hear. It's the only song that Ringo wrote that appeared on a Beatles album and The Band's favorite song on The White Album. The lyrics are simplistic...but that's Ringo for you, and isn't that his best trait? His lovable loser persona is emphasized by the fact that his song finds him in danger of being alone. In a move that has been heard endlessly since from other bands: the song breaks down into silence only to be bounced back into action again by those trusty drums for another minute of country-pop bliss. Most important of all is the fiddle arrangement, and it is wonderful. To quote Alan W. Pollack: "This song provides an object lesson on how an almost painfully simplistic ditty can still be redeemed by virtue of an imaginative arrangement and delivery."

Nada Surf-Popular

It gives me chills how true over-simplifying can sometimes be. I feel dumb for saying this because I know what I think if I read someone else writing it but I really like the yelling. Well written indie always gets makes my head bop.

I'm not one to pick favourites when it comes to music, and not having a single bit of musical talent in me, for musical reasons i can't explain why i like certain things.

But at the moment, i absolutely love Lost Prophets - Last train Home.

It's the song that i have to listen to if i need to get all pumped up. It's just something that gets me running high.

Im surre we could all go on forever talking about our musical loves though..

People keep mentioning favorites...I want to underline the fact that I never asked for favorites. Any song you love is a prime candidate for the thread. "Don't Pass Me By" would certainly never make my top ten, but I still do love it.
