Miserable bastards

Whats wrong with a little upbeat funky music for the summer.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 07-03-2006 12:26 PM

theres nowt wrong with upbeat.
but theres everything wrong with gnarls barkley.
well okay, not everything, but if it wasnt for his voice & the general repititiveness [sp?] of everything, it wouldnt be quite so mindnumbingly awful.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-03-2006 12:27 PM

I want to know how many people are talking about the band and how many are talking about the single.

I suspect in most cases it`s the latter

ArtistInTheAmbulance 07-03-2006 12:30 PM

im talking about the single :)
but then, ive only heard one other track, & ive had no desire to listen again.
like i said, show me a standout track, & ill give it a shot.

swim 07-03-2006 12:31 PM

I'm rather indifferent to Gnarls Barkley. I just find a dissappreciation thread of any sort stupid.

Not necessarily stupid.
It can serve a purpose, especially if it goes some way to encourage people to see past the single and have a good listen to the album.

Album of the year for me, but that's just my opinion.

Mr Sensitive 07-03-2006 12:36 PM

I rather like Gnarls Barkley.

I hate that word. Almost anything involving that word puts me off the subject unless I'm already familiar with it.

It was a sunny day, and a mate of mine said he'd brought this funky new album. I was like okay, lets hear it then, you listen to some crap but I know your not likely to make me gag. He puts the disc in:

"a ring ding ding ding weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" Crazy Frog. For fuck sake. Then two weeks later he says he's got this funky new tune on his cell, it was batman.

So thats the last time I trust anything thats 'funky'. Funky sounds queer enough as it is without being associated to bad music.

Shit this is almost good enough for the bitch box.

Cheese 07-04-2006 02:59 AM

It's not my usual cup of char, but the whole album's grown on me to the point it's included in the selection that randomly plays in my car.
For that to happen it must be an extraordinary listen for me to be worthy of travelling with me.:)

same here. I see the appeal for the trendy myspace kids, but apparantly he's got some of you fooled as well. *feels bad*

boo boo 07-04-2006 10:01 AM

There are some good funky rap groups out there, but nowadays they're awful hard to find, some people just prefer to keep it old school.

I meant funky as in funk based , not 'good' .

My mistake, I just have a thing with that word. Probably much the same as when someone says Dream Theater to you:p:

Hey hey Big3, you watching? You, you watching? Your gonna miss this...

You're beautiful. You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do.

Rabid Sea Turtles 07-04-2006 08:29 PM

I happen to like Gnarls Barkley.........call me crazzzzzzy, but I do.

Spike*Spiegel 07-05-2006 05:08 PM

Laces Out Dan! 07-05-2006 07:04 PM

Violent Femmes cover?
I'm downloading this album because I suppose it's something I should be aware of.

Laces Out Dan! 07-05-2006 07:21 PM

Im not sure if its a cover...all i know is that the song gets on my nerves....but the album in general is good

swim 07-05-2006 07:51 PM

Yea it's a cover. Those vocals don't work. The mix is pretty damn good but those vocals just suck it up. Um, so, I listened just finished listening to their last/(first?) album and it's pretty good. Smiley Faces is the highlight of this album. Just a great song and then it's followed by a song that's complete shit. But over all, yea, pretty good.

Laces Out Dan! 07-05-2006 11:32 PM

Yeah...Smiley Faces has got SOUL!

right-track 07-05-2006 11:51 PM

Pure Motown throwback. :)

Laces Out Dan! 07-05-2006 11:52 PM

Do you know any other bands....new or old...that have the same feel of the more Motown songs on that album?

right-track 07-05-2006 11:54 PM

60's R&B band The Originals, with an upbeat song in particular called Suspicion.
Worth tracking down.

Laces Out Dan! 07-05-2006 11:55 PM

Alright thanks a million man

bungalow 07-06-2006 12:29 AM

Gnarls Barley ain't rap foo'
But they are okay, I'll give them that.

I like..um. Crazy of course, and Who Cares? and I can basically just listen to the entire album through.
It's aight.

The obvious comparison to 'Smiley Faces' would be 'You Can't Hurry Love' - The Supremes.

^Smiley Faces vid.^

Edit:LesPaul...Tammi Terrel did a version of 'This Old Heart Of Mine (is weak for you)' - Isley Brothers.
Similar tempo, same feel.
