Gnarls Barkley

a thread had to be made. so what's their status in the US? toppin any charts?

and someone asked me if i could recommend anyone similar...any ideas? ( last.fm is giving me some funky results )

hookers with machineguns 05-01-2006 06:12 PM

I actually checked them out earlier today and was not very impressed. The single is quite good, but I should have known better, b/c I've never been too big on Cee-Lo.

IamAlejo 05-01-2006 07:34 PM

There really isn't too much similar in the US to them. They're not topping any charts over here, but they are catching on a bit.

I like the single, as hookers said, but the rest of the stuff really doesn't do it for me.

America doesn`t really do pop so I can`t see them being that big over there.

pop? this is soul, r'n'b, hip hop and dance....i still don't see how anyone can dislike the album if they like Crazy....

IamAlejo 05-01-2006 07:50 PM

Mainstream america does not have good taste in music. This will catch on big with magazines like Spin and such, but I have a hard time seeing them making it to the top of the charts (in the US)

bungalow 05-01-2006 08:31 PM

There is a small bit about them in the new issue of Time. And there is one about those satanist nazis known as Red Hot Chili Peppers too.

hookers with machineguns 05-01-2006 08:34 PM

I think they will catch on here, I can easily see two or three songs going big. Has Crazy broken out yet in the US? I'm so out of touch with all that so I wouldn't know.

bungalow 05-01-2006 08:37 PM

I haven't listened to the radio or watched any musical television in a while, I really couldn't tell you. I have been out of touch with the mainstream music ever since I got the cable disconnected from my room :(

Oh how I miss MTV and day long marathons of Room Raiders :(

adidasss 05-01-2006 08:37 PM

well, i would say they have potential to top the US charts too...but the album has been out in the US for some time now i think....

TheBig3 05-01-2006 10:03 PM

Thats because you don't get VH1 Classic Soul.

Gnarls Barkley

awful name.
awful music.
awful everything.

I'm sick and tired of hearing everyone saying this guy's incredible/unique.
Not gonna lie, I honestly would not mind if Gnarles Barkley's tour bus flipped over a few times.

boo boo 07-02-2006 12:30 AM

They're not THAT bad.

Though as far as Danger Mouse's projects are concerned, Danger Doom are a helleva lot better.

If you want to criticize hip hop, lets start with Lin Jon (hey buddy, the man in my avatar wants his sunglasses back) and how his skills as a rapper are so nonexistant it explains why he always invites guests on his records to DO the rapping FOR him.

What does Mariah ever seen in this guy?... Sista needs to hook up with a real man.

Marry me Mariah.

Laces Out Dan! 07-02-2006 12:31 AM

I actually like Gnarls Barkley...but yes the Name sucks.
As for the album St.Elsewhere i only dislike 2 songs...and a lot of the songs have a lot of soul..smiley faces for instance...sorry, i kind of contradicted this thread's purpose

hiu 07-02-2006 12:33 AM

I don't like it and have expressed my hatred for this duo in many threads. Same goes for the shit Danger Mouse Grey Album and all Cee-Lo bullshit.

boo boo 07-02-2006 12:39 AM

Maybe we should have a Streets disappreciation thread?

I'm still convinced that Mike Skinner is the worst rapper EVER!!!

Edge you've got this thing nailed.

To think James Blunt was gonna be on the top of my hate list for the entire year.

Merkaba's Disappreciation Seal Of Approval. *STAMPED*

beat yr own KID 07-02-2006 12:56 AM

It's only an opinion hobo.

As for Gnarls Barkley I happen to like him.
His album is brilliant and diverse.
His approach is original and refreshing.

adidasss 07-02-2006 03:57 AM

i still can't help but to get annoyed at people who dislike music that i personally love....
st.elsewhere is one of the best albums of the year....and i hate you all for not liking it....*is cross*

TrampInaTux 07-02-2006 03:58 AM

In my world only my opinion counts :)

I guess there's no accounting for taste.
They either don't get it, or it's clearly too much for them to take in.

Hehe...that should ruffle a few feathers...

Good lyrics, horrible flow and rhythm.

I've heard him talk in interviews, he sounds EXACTLY the same as he does on record.

TrampInaTux 07-02-2006 04:16 AM

We've had this conversation before if I remember correctly...

His lyrics are phenomenal, and yes the flow and rythm is off but I think that is part of his appeal.
And about him speaking the same way in interviews? In case you hadn't realised, that is the whole point of Skinner. He speaks the way he raps (even though I wouldn't class it as Rap) to give that whole 'down to earth' approach that makes his music seems so much more real.

Merkaba 07-02-2006 04:29 AM

^ I think your craaaaaazzzaaaayyyyyyy:p:

Yuck.

TrampInaTux 07-02-2006 04:43 AM

There are those who love him and those who hate him, I just happen to sit neatly in between. The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living was a great album but has kind of worn old now. I didn't really like A Grand Don't Come For Free, but that's the album that everybody seems to love. Although I think that's partly down to the radio friendly singles that were released from it.

You can't like "him" much if you refer to them as a him.

lolol

TrampInaTux 07-02-2006 04:55 AM

You could easily think Gnarls Barkley is a solo artist. It sounds like a name, not a group, and Danger Mouse only produces. Cee-Lo wasn't mega famous a solo artist either.

easy mistake, but yes, it's a group, both of them are equaly responslible for the sound i would say...

right-track 07-02-2006 04:59 AM

I'm well aware "Gnarls Barkley" isn't a solo artist.

TrampInaTux 07-02-2006 05:00 AM

Yeah, in fact I would say Danger Mouse is the biggest reason for their success. Cee Lo's solo stuff isn't very good at all really. He has a fantastic voice, but the beats that Danger Mouse produces make the group.

hiu 07-02-2006 05:04 AM

Has anyone heard the bullshit Grey Album. I would prefer to eat right-tracks semen than listen to that album again.

MURDER JUNKIE 07-02-2006 05:11 AM

Are you honestly trying to tell me James Blunt is better than someone? Lay off the kiwi brother, its going to your head.

Merkaba 07-02-2006 04:28 PM

They can tie for the win.

_Spinning_ 07-02-2006 04:32 PM

I Hate Gnarles Barkley...
He annoys the crap outta me.

sleepy jack 07-02-2006 09:35 PM

I saw him/them/whatever's music video on TV and I didn't like it at all.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 07-03-2006 12:18 PM
