It's been so long ago since I read article, I can't remember if it was a concert, convention, festival etc etc.

The Yellow Shark album is a recording of Zappa's song by Ensemble Modern, who performed works by other composers as well.

EDIT: I mentioned Burl Ives as 20th composer a couple of posts back, I meant Charles Ives.

Yellow Shark is one of my favourite Zappa releases. I think Boulez Conducts Zappa: The Perfect Stranger is his best classically oriented album becuase ****ing Pierre Boulez dude.

Well, Tom pretty much said that there is no band that could not look bad opening for Slayer...it's a really stupid statement to make. He's saying his band has a better live show than Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Anthrax, any of the other really big Metal bands from the mid 70's, through the 80's, or generally, Tom is saying that there is absolutely no band that can top Slayers live show. If that isn't an I'm so f*cking full of myself kind of statement, I don't know what is. All I can say is it only gives me more reason to think Tom is a pretentious bag of sh*t, lol. I don't care about the irrefutable fact of Slayer being able to completely command their audience, that's respectable, yes. But I don't care how big a band is, statements like what Tom made doesn't look good at all, not to me.

You should hear some of the arrogant things Bruce Dickinson has said. He probably makes Tom Araya look positively humble. But he's still Bruce ****ing Dickinson, and as far as I'm concerned, considering his body of work, he's entitled to some douchiness.

At a certain point, it can be fun. I wouldn't listen to Burzum if I didn't think the music was fantastic, but Varg's Varginess definitely adds a certain spice to listening to his albums. Wouldn't spend money on a Burzum album, as Varg has his own neo-Nazi organization, but I'm perfectly happy to indulge in a little morbid fun by listening to that **** for free.

yea, i disagree. their personality should compliment their work imo. the whole thing is sort of a package deal to me. i agree with batlord though about arrogance. i would take it a step further and say i really dislike most humble people in general, especially humble people that talk about their own humility.

CoNtrivedNiHilism 12-04-2014 11:46 AM

hahaha, I see how it looked like I said Tom Petty.

I get where you're all coming from, I do. But I think Tom holds his band in a bit too much regard or high praise.

Iron Maid concert comparable to any Slayer show, Iron Maiden is the better live band, hands down. So, f*ck you Tom. And yeah, Bruce is a pretty big douche too, I agree.

I'd argue that being humble about your own humility is hubristic.

The Ensemble Modern is great. "Greggery Peccary & Other Persuasions" a posthumously released album with Zappa compositions is also highly recommended.

(And "Traffic Continues" by Fred Frith & Ensemble Modern is one of my all time favourites.)

you'd have to expand on that for me to agree or disagree with you

i just know i know people who always say **** like "i try to be humble" and i always feel like saying man if you really came across as humble you wouldn't have to announce it to me. it's like you're bragging about not bragging about ****.

but tbh i don't necessarily dislike all humble people i am just trying to think of one i've found interesting and i can't. i guess jesus seemed pretty chill and people say he was humble but then i think really how humble is it to claim to be god.

Hubris is arrogance/pride etc. I wasn't necessarily stating an opinion, just pointing out that boasting your own humility is pretty arrogant.

And I'm like WTF does Tom Petty have to do with Slayer? Dementia may be starting earlier than I'd hoped. :usehead:

I thought he was talking about Tom Petty as well.
