The part about LZ reaching further into the avant-garde is a bit too much though.

Not really. The Residents are just goofy circus music. Taking the definition of avant garde meaning pushing the boundaries, we have Jimmy Page who actually did that in an effectual way verses a band who merely represents failed attempts at weirdness.

I get where you're coming from with The Residents to a degree, but that bit about Zeppelin is just ridiculous.

When Whole Lotta Love goes into freak out mode the power that's unleashed is unspeakable. And when Page gets the violin bow going on Dazed and Confused Live he didn't just take the guitar somewhere new, he took tens of millions of people with him. It's easy to take it for granted today but he was expanding the musical universe. When you compare side by side how out reaching it was at the time and easily it's accepted today you can see that he didn't just push the boundaries; he smashed them.

Scoff if you want but I completely stand by that. Jimmy Page is a revolutionary.

He was definitely a huge influencer. Innovator? Not so much. There's a big difference between the two.

Let's just stick to the two examples from Whole Lotta Love and D&C Live. Who beat him to it?

Freak out mode is pretty hard to define, but Masayuki Takayanagi is a good predecessor, albehim far different. You could also use Hendrix as an example if you want a more popular artist.

Using a bow on a stringed instrument had been done too

That video is dynamite!!! That's nuts how he goes jumps into that bowed solo like that. Very very cool.

I had a feeling when presented with the challenge it wouldn't take you long.

But with Masayuki Takayanagi we could go on all day with free jazz and improv and so on. I'm talking about within a certain framework. The Creation is fair game, though.

I'll make my last point and then respectfully leave it alone. The Residents try to freak me out and fail. Zeppelin tries to make me rock out and manages to freak me out while I'm rocking out at the same time. Even with your excellent counter I stand by everything I said about Zep. I don't have anything else to add, however.

As much as I love The Residents, I do agree that they have a kind of contrived and far too self-conscious approach to weirdness. Renaldo and the Loaf feels a lot more organic with their oddness.
