Those folks seem to really have been forgotten by the majority in younger generations, and they were all easily Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd/Bruce Springsteen/etc. or even Beatles-caliber famous in their day.
Basically anything past when the Beatles stopped being a boyband is forgotten. I'm assuming this was when Rolling Stone magazine started up and began telling people what to listen to. It's amazing the influence a magazine that nobody reads can have after all these years.

Everything before the Beatles might as well be literal ancient history in my eyes/ears. I don't know much about anything before around the mid 60's. Maybe I know more about classical music. Not that I listen to it, though. Point being that the goal post for what constitutes dusty old crap moves a bit every generation.

Chula thinks that an old fart not liking the young fart generation's music is new? Fascinating.

I like lots of young fart music. Just not most of the young fart stuff posted on this forum.

Re: Zeppelin

Rolling Stone Magazine HATED them. They slammed every one of their albums. The press in general hated them. They made their name off of underground FM stations and constant touring. They toured the US five times in their first year of existence. And each time they'd play bigger and bigger halls based solely on word of mouth.

After that it was the brilliance of the albums and highly publicized tours that made them the biggest grossing act of the 70s.

About 7-8 years ago VH1 did a "Top 100 Artists of all Time" poll based on votes from musicians, producers, and fans from all types of genres of music. Young and old.

1. The Beatles
2. Michael Jackson
3. Led Zeppelin

The mighty Zep isn't going anywhere. I see teens wearing Zep T-shirts all the time around here.

This is true. Even my parents - both in their early 60's - only listen to stuff recorded inside the last 10-15 years or so. I'm born in 1981 but will listen to stuff from the 70's. I know younger people who will listen to older stuff than I do, but they're music nerds too at least to some degree.

As if they're wearing them because they're big fans as opposed to them being easy to get logo tees at pretty much every clothing store. There is just too much wrong with this patting your music taste on the back post, but I'll tell you that VH1 sways towards an older audience.

Has anyone actually ever watched VH1?

I guess that happens in any art form.

If I'm not mistaken; isn't it also a pretty recent phenomenon that Lou Reed's Metal Machine music is actually considered legit good music by many people? I thought it was assumed to be a joke by everyone a while further back.

It can be a joke and still be good. Unless the artist doesn't even try then even their attempts to **** with people can still rule.
