John McLaughlin's solo on Sister Andrea from the live album Between Nothingness and Eternity (1973) was more of a game changer than Hendrix as far as shred guitar goes.

Solo kicks off at 1:30

That is a brilliant solo and song, but it is impossible to surpass Hendrix on guitar influence. Plus, I'd say that the guitar on Bitches Brew had more of an influence than Mahavishnu.

Key word: SHRED. You now that EVH heard that solo a few times just based on his reliance on fast tremolo picking while climbing scales. He used it on every one of his signature solos.

When Roth heard Beat It and Eddie's solo he commented "I don't know what the big deal is. It's the same solo he's been playing in Van Halen for years."

Hendrix shredded too.

Ironic thing is that Beat It, along with Spanish Fly, is the only EVH I like.

My fave EVH is this. Wearing his Holdsworth worship on his sleeve during the solo.

Not sure why it fades out so quickly. Figure Eddie must have hit a major clam or something.

Is he really touted as a guitar god?

I'll wait

EDIT - Frown ninja'd me, I'm not really calling him a guitar god. He has made some pretty great music though.

I like Josh a lot. Especially after Them Crooked Vultures.

Josh Homme is easily one of the best guitarists out there. I'm yet to hear anything by Homme that isn't just amazing!
