Listened to a bit of their second album. Sounded good, but not particularly different. They just don't do the weedly weedly Stratovarius guitar thing.

The weedly weedly guitar thing is annoying, but not as much as the huge, epic choir and the dark, intoning voice, usually at the start of an album. And let's not forget the obligatory acoustic ballad...

I guess what I find different about them is fairly subtle. It's a lot in how multi layered and detailed their arrangements are. They lean very much towards some very busy guitar playing with lots of harmonic interplay in a way that doesn't really sound like any other band I can think of. Their debut album and the album Be Gone are the best, but they've been a very solid band and I'm excited that they're talking about maybe making a new album.

Apparently y'all don't like Tool. Though I'll admit, I'm slightly biased due to nostalgia since my mother listened to them while I was growing up.

Definitely one of the more boring bands to get so much praise. I keep being told how they're the most genius, most musically interesting band on the planet and I'm just not hearing or seeing it.

No, I don't get it either, and apparently as a proghead I should. I listened to one of their albums (Aenima, maybe? Not sure. Lateralus, perhaps? Shrug) for my "Love or Hate?" thread and I was kind of what? What's the big deal? This is boring. Batty was proud of me.

Well you see: they are not. Don't let their ****boy fan base spoil them for you, they're a 6 or 7/10 alt metal band that makes pretty straightforward music with cool drumming.

Nah not really. Tool is a band that people who don't listen to prog like to call prog to feel fancy.

Tool was probably more famous for it's animated videos. Adam Jones was kind of a master with stop motion animation. Of course, the videos, especially Prison Sex, were, I guess you can say, graphic. Musically, they didn't impress me much at all but, creepy as the videos were, they could (well, Adam Jones anyway) certainly be called creative.
