Vocals and percussion are usually a needless distraction. Especially post 2010.

Meh, I think that while a lot of artists tack both of those onto their music in a really empty way just to check the boxes, but there's still a place for them.

It's not an unpopular opinion, it's a fact.

I mean, sure, lots of music has boring vocals, but usually those same pieces will not have good music either, which should indicate that the vocals are not the problem.

The only genres where I'd tend to agree that vocals are usually disposable would be various extreme metal genres. Growling* is usually just a thing that one learns to ignore. It is almost never interesting in itself. I honestly think metalheads often prefer growling because that just means they don't have to find themselves challenged by the vocals. Growling tends to quickly just turn into white noise and fade into the back of your mind. Growled vocals are only difficult to deal with for people who are new to them; after that, it becomes the easy, lazy option for the listener.

*growling here used as inclusive of all very harsh, abrasive styles common to metal.

I was with you until you specified that you were talking about all abrasive singing and not just cliched DM growls.

Anyway I think that there's some truth to metalheads not wanting non-abrasive vocals to avoid being challenged, but for me I don't want clean vocals in my metal because they're usually either ****ty or corny, and sometimes there are little bits of corn in the ****.
