Oddly rockist. That 12 year old is a band kid with a poisoned philosophy of music and you officially support that now.

I guess never say never.

The music I listen to on a given week now is generally way softer than would it would have been just 5 years ago. But even now, I'm not seeing myself ever get into smooth jazz and AOR. Generally too "soulless" for my tastes*. I'd say expressiveness, "songwriting" and texture has become way more important for me with time, while I care less and less about flashy, technical playing by the minute. I used to be all about guitar riffs and solos.

* Just a subjective experience of much of the music. I'm not saying it's bad music.

I continue to pick up new things under that broad "umbrella" of avant music. But by the same token I pick up new things in other genres I've come to like more as well in recent years. The trick is to not become jaded when you encounter the same aesthetics enough in any one area.

No one is going to agree with me on this, but that's part of why I like Dir En Grey so much. They use riffs less as individually memorable hooks and more as splashes of color that serve the rest of the song.

Some of what I've seen you post related to jazz borders on "smooth". And I think you'd like a lot of Pat Metheny's output too, maybe something like Dreaming Of Trains by Ken Navarro. Just a matter of exploring a bit.
