If you want a less djenty, better version of what Thank You Scientist are trying to do I'd recommend checking out Karmic Juggernaut.

Thank You Scientist! are not really typical prog, they have a strong power pop vibe going on. It initially scared me off as well but once I got over the cringe I started seeing the fun.

Neoprog has sounded ****ty and too polished since the 80s, same with most Prog Metal. Retroprog and Avantprog are doing just fine.

Ja once things moved past symphonic prog it all started go downhill, but there's a lot of great prog bands hiding behind math rock, jazz fusion, and brutal prog identities these days that aren't so squeaky clean or obnoxious.

Maracas are mad underrated.

They will forever feel plebeian after elementary school music class.

The Physics House Band put out a pretty great record last year in the same vein you're talking about.
