U2's Songs of Innocence imo

Also imagine being upset over how the snare is mixed on an album full of James Hetfield's vocals.

I don't remember anyone talking about that. I didn't even know it was a thing.

U2. TBH only music nerds ever cared about the snare anyway.

The U2 album was the one that they automatically downloaded onto every Apple product.

It's possible the lack of me every hearing about this or anyone around me so much as mentioning it might speak volumes to my point and the lengths a modern rock band would go to bridge the now insurmountable gap between them and a now indifferent public. All Metallica had to do was release an album that sucked after not releasing anything for years.

It's not a true rawk album, but what about Blackstar?

People cared about Bowie's death more than the album and I'd still say the vast majority of people who did care were the music nerd community. Again, public at large, not music nerds, or else I'm sure you could mention any number of indie rock albums that were big for the nerds and everyone was talking about online but not actually irl.
