I think it's a bit presumptuous to think only the lower class engages in this sort of activity. Plenty of people with money lack taste. And having standards doesn't require you to have money.

I don't think taste is/should be a reaction.

My view is that good taste is when someone identifies music that they're passionate about, ideally by exploring the field. Then there are people with no taste who will put on Music when it's appropriate but don't really think about it. The only thing that I'd directly call bad taste is when people are passionate about music as a status symbol or statement. That could be listening to Pantera to represent the south, going to the opera because it's "classy", listening to reggae because you smoke weed, Tiny Desk-curated appreciation of foreign artists to feel cultured, listening to Nugent to own the libs, etc.
