Spoiler for The LP in question:

You'e not the only one with that opinion.

Another one of my unpopular musical opinions: Stevie Nicks has a voice that sounds like she's strung out on Quaaludes, writes insipid songs, and generally comes across in her music as an insincere jerk.

Looking at the track list, I might even go as far as to say that it's only an EP's worth of great songs.

During the 70's and into the early 80's, I'd be willing to bet money that she was no stranger to 'ludes.

Here are a couple more.

I understand why 'Bitches Brew' by Miles Davis gets praised but I find it to be a tedious listen.

Ditto for 'Trout Mask Replica' by Captain Beefheart.

I haven't heard all of Bitches Brew. But while Miles Davis was certainly an innovator, the constant praise for him, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and a few others to the exclusion of everyone else, gets tiring. It would be healthy for those who want to see jazz stay alive and prosper to check out the work of others, including living jazz musicians who are doing great work.

And if that isn't an unpopular music opinion, I don't know what is.

I don’t watch American Idol. My wife and daughter do, and their opinions are split: my wife likes his singing, my daughter not so much. From that very unscientific sample, I can only conclude that his winning the contest wouldn’t be universally popular. But since I don’t have a dog in the hunt, as they say, I hope for your sake he wins, Holly.

^^^ Thank you. Normally I am not this invested in the show because I've never been a big fan of it, but John is just mesmerizing. His voice and his smile are the two newest things that I will never be tired of.

God bless you and him always!!!

Hear me out...

These are the most famous albums from 1) Miles Davis's electric phase 2) the Magic Band. But neither makes for a particularly good entry point. I only got into Bitches Brew after I got into stuff like On The Corner, In a Silent Way, Jack Johnson and esp Agharta, Pangaeae and Dark Magus. Bitches Brew is more cerebral than those, a more difficult listen.

Ditto with Trout Mask Replica. I first got into Beefheart through a budget price "best of" of the early stuff. It got me so excited about him that I was ready to plunge headlong into TMR and had the patience for what's going on there. And the truth is, it's a pretty inconsistent record with its share of misses. If I had to recommend Beefheart albums it wouldn't be in the top 3 of Safe as Milk, Mirror Man and, above all, the truly incredible Decals.

I'm almost sure there was a period maybe a decade ago when the cool thing among millennials was being into Stevie Nicks. Not just the band but her entire persona. I remember thinking "really? is that what we're going with now?" It was every bit as annoying as "poptimism" or even the same thing as poptimism, I'm not quite certain.

Wow, that's definitely a strong take! I get that Stevie Nicks isn’t for everyone—her vocal style is pretty distinct, and it can be polarizing. But I’d argue that’s part of what makes her so iconic.

What some hear as "strung out," others hear as dreamy, mystical, and emotionally raw. Her voice has this unique, raspy vulnerability that really cuts through, especially on tracks like Landslide or Silver Springs. And while not every song is a lyrical masterpiece, she’s written some genuinely powerful stuff.
