If anyone writes a genre off because many of its artists aren't original, they're dumb.

Nu metal is boring, skilless garbage. It all sounds exactly the same and the sound is terrible. It's annoying. It's repetitive in a bad way. I've never heard a nu metal song I like.

Whenever someone says "Better than The Beatles", I take it as quality wise. There's no denying the impact The Beatles had on music, and whenever someone says "I don't like The Beatles", I'm fine with it, so long as that person knows what they did and respects them.

Now, I think Van Halen and AC/DC are fuc‎king terrible. I'd rather have a cow take a crap in my ears than listen to their music. I think they're insults to top-tier artists and should have never released an album.

Joni Mitchell and Pavement I've heard of but don't know a lot about.

Steely Dan, though, is my definite favorite band. S‎hit, I'm listening to them right now. Now, album-to-album, quality-wise? I'd say this is plausible. Steely Dan is probably the most consistent band in history and were always top notch, and I think that they could definitely run the table in a discussion about album quality.

ok, i can why you don't like it, but on my side of the fence i enjoy the main groove of the songs combined with the hard hitting instrumentation. while you may see that as "boring" i see it as something i can really move to, in a way a kind of heavy funk music.

as for how it's "skilless", i say it's not so much what you have, but how you use it. there's plenty of musicians who have skill up to their eyeballs, but squander it in meaningless shred-fests and overblown displays of technicality. not saying that there aren't people with alot of skill who can really make music, just that i'm not too picky on skill levels as long as the musicians can take what they have and make it entertaining.

but yeah, not sayng you have to like nu-metal or anything. there's music that doesn't appeal to me, but i still can get why others like it*cough* classical *cough*

Yeah I'm not much of a classical fan either, even though I appreciate the talent it takes to make that kind of music.

I share your opinion of nu-metal but I hate the argument in any situation when people say that a ertain genre or even band takes no skill. Who cares if they're playing power chords or their whole songs consist of sweeping, it's about whatever sounds good.

Some extremely hard stuff can sound great

and some really simple stuff can sound just as good. (as it can sound bad just like any other style of music)

Wait, so it's dumb to write off a genre because many of its artists aren't original, but it's ok to write one off as boring, skilless garbage?

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

Don't worry, I didn't understand it the contradiction there, either.

I'm all for grooves but every nu metal song I've heard either doesn't have any real groove or a terrible one. And then they have all that heavy bullshi‎t going on in the background and it just doesn't work at all.

Yeah, but 95% of talentless musicians make terrible music with the other 5% maybe doing something interesting.

Def. I rarely try to sway one's musical tastes covering entire genres.

Cause originality = awesome, right? So, like, Merzbow is the greatest isn't he?
