Sonic Youth sucks! sorry. Noise-type music is just a contradiction and I can't stand it.
i don't really like sonic youth either. however, dismissing more than an entire genre is a tad shortsighted in my book.

Are there any bands kinda like them that you like? They are really the only ones I know of who use as much noise as they do.

I do like Dinosaur Jr., but I don't they really use a lot of "noise"

I think people who believe that if you dislike a genre, you're short sighted are completely in the wrong. Unless the person they're saying it to are dismissing the genre because of 1 or 2 bands.

So, in other words I think it's okay to disregard an entire genre if you've heard a fair amount of music from that genre.

I agree with you here.

And I would be willing to listen to some other bands in the same genre as Sonic Youth before dismissing that genre once and for all. But I have tried on a number of occasions to listen to some Sonic Youth and have never finished a song.

So either way I still don't like them. But I don't really know any other bands in that genre or close to that genre.

blindly dismissing anything is a mistake, especially something defined by something so silly as a music genre.

Blindly? Yes.

Delving into the genre, and giving it a fair chance. And if you still find yourself not liking the what you've heard from the genre, then by all means dismiss it. As long as you have an open mind about it in the future, because things can change.

This definitely. Because I used to HATE all country related music, but have recently developed an appreciation for Johnny Cash & Willy Nelson.
