You don't like Colonel Klegg? I personally love SOS.

Any rate, I'd have to put my bid in the Barrett being overrated. It's like, the guy was in Pink Floyd for 1, and a fragment of an album before going nuts. Pink Floyd were in their infancy, and I doubt they would have been that significant if they would have kept the Piper sound. I don't dislike the album, just don't honestly feel it's all that significant. Compare it to what say Soft Machine was doing a few years later, and I'd even go so far to say it was damn mediocre even in comparison to British psychedelic.

I'm sure he was good, even inventive, but I haven't seen any evidence of him being the genius that people make him out to be. If Pink Floyd wouldn't have adopted their more studio based sound later, than they would have faded into obscurity among the likes of guys like Hendrix(Pretty much did what Barrett was doing but a million times better).

Terence Hill, as recently confirmed during an interview to an Italian TV talk-show, was offered the role but rejected it because he considered it "too violent". Dustin Hoffman and John Travolta declined the role for the same reason. When Al Pacino was considered for the role of John Rambo, he turned it down when his request that Rambo be more of a madman was rejected.

Have you heard his solo album, The Madcap Laughs?

Damn right they are. Came across Seasons on my laptop recently (not sure how it got there!) Thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's said that Gilmour did a lot of writing on both the Madcap Laughs and Barret.
I like both albums by the way.

Great album. The story behind recording it was kind of strange/sad, though.

I only have a comp of both with some out-takes (Bob Dylan's Blues), but I love it

I started listening to classical music when I was young and most other people of my age probably didn't listen to it either. But there was a good reason I did it. Around that time the chart music was getting weaker and I was finding less in popular music to interest me. Classical music is a good way to get into good music quickly, alot of the best stuff has already been sorted out over time.

Nowadays perhaps it's similar in that to find music that they like some people have to dig quite deep beyond the charts or hyped stuff. Until recently I thought the last decade was mainly just crap music, it was only when I started looking through all the stuff beneath the hype that I saw there was actually lesser known music that could appeal to me. Most probably don't have the time or inclination to do that and hear crap on the radio, or listen to some highly recommended 'cool' stuff find they don't like it and just give up.

Now if somebody doesn't like classical music or don't really want to give it a try then that's ok. They can listen to whatever they want. But others can listen too whatever they want to, including classical music.

Right around the first time I listened to The Madcap Laughs I had a friend who was succumbing to acid influenced mental illness. The scary thing about it was how similar he sounded to Syd Barrett.

Despite being sad, as you said, it is also a very interesting musical experiment. Syd never played a song the same way twice, so they would use his best take and dub over it, working around bad notes and off times. I think the result is actually really good...the whole album is very interesting.

Here's probably an unpopular opinion with some because of the hatred some people seem to have for Susan Boyle (why spout vitriol about a singer?) and the veneration some seem to give to Crowded House, but I actually prefer her version of Don't Dream It's Over to the original. Far more expressive.
