That's really how and why some of those albums have the reputation they do.

Keep in mind, no internet streaming options in 1991-92 when SLTS was charting, and peaking at #6 in North America. Here are some of the other highlights from those years...

(Everything I Do) I Do It For You, Bryan Adams
Gonna Make You Sweat, C+C Music Factory (till you bleed)
Unbelievable, EMF (OHhhh!)
More Than Words, Extreme
Baby, Baby, Amy Grant
From A Distance, Bette Midler
Right Here, Right Now, Jesus Jones
Good Vibrations, Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch (Whalberg)
Justify My Love, Madonna
Joyride, Roxette
Losing My Religion, R.E.M.
Summertime, D.J. Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince
Baby Got Back, Sir Mix A-lot
Jump, Kris Kross
Under The Bridge, Red Hot Chili Peppers (it wasn't all horrible)
To Be With You, Mr. Big (yes it was)
I'm Too Sexy, Right Said Fred
Achy Breaky Heart, Billy Ray Cyrus (it really was)
November Rain, Guns N' Roses
Life Is A Highway, Tom Cochrane

SLTS ended up as #32 for 1992...

So when you compare SLTS and Nevermind to the albums featuring the crap listed above it kind of becomes a little clearer why it had such an impact on the mainstream and developed the reputation it has.

Though to be honest I'm surprised at the popularity of the so-called 2nd gen grunge kids who all jumped onto the Nirvana train. Talk about missing the point.

Monkey see, monkey do (I don't know whyYYYyyyyy)
Well I see the point, NIrvana basically had a lot of luck with its timing and with its hit single, I doubt they would've been all that popular if SLTS wouldn't have hit the charts.

I'm still grateful to them for launching the grunge scene off (or at least until Kurt died) and I like their music but I think that people of my age who prefer Nirvana over Soundgarden or AIC are silly.

The MB general album club has reminded me of an opinion I have that I would imagine would be quite unpopular.

I've tried several times but I find Swans boring.

I kind of agree, but I am not entirely sure if it is the band themselves, or the style of music that bores me. I respect them hugely, but I really need to listen to more of their work to qualify my opinion.

I find the Swans that everyone lauds as amazing and innovative, boring. "Soundtracks for the Blind" is particularly bleh, but I did like their 2010 release quite a bit even though Swans faithfuls didn't seem to.

I'm just full of unpopular music opinions...

When it comes to music, I like 'cheese'. Muzak, lounge, easy listening... and I take it seriously- I'm picky about it even. My iPod is irony/novelty free as far as I'm concerned.

Coldplay makes damn good music, and Viva La Vida is a finely crafted album.

Agreed. I occasionally listen to A Rush of Blood to the Head and it's a damn fine album.

(I actually had Viva La Vida on my Soulseek download queue when I saw this post. :p)

I highly agree with the Swans and Coldplay opinions. I tried Love of Life and White Light from the etc but neither really did anything for me. I just find the music repetitive and the voice creepy in a very bad way.

Unpopular with the crowd- 'Call Me Maybe' really, really sucks.

'Relationship of the Command' isn't the only good At the Drive In album.

City of Caterpillar is great, but the post-rock stuff goes on for too long.

Every parody of Call Me Maybe has better lyrics than the original. I was disappointed when I finally heard the original.
