I think that's a fair argument. I think the stigma surrounding it as being a crutch has probably hurt the extent to which people are willing to experiment with it.

But bands like Kraftwerk used vocoders and I don't see any difference. Maybe they're not "real artists" either. Who's to know.

Maybe the thesis of my argument should really be "if you use the term 'real music' you're being a douche and you should stop".

I like that thesis.. I got over believing my music is better than everyone else years ago.

If you enjoy a child banging wooden spoons on a pot than that's awesome. Just please don't shove it down my throat.

The only thing that you could possibly argue about in music is how technically difficult it is to perform, but difficulty has nothing to do with personal taste.

The only place I know is the Trocadero in Philly.
The first thing I'd say if you're into indie type stuff is check out R5 Productions and maybe get on their mailing list. They organize a lot of indie (and metal and alt hip-hop) shows around Philly in both traditional venues and non-traditional venues like the First Unitarian Church basement, which is kind of a Philly staple.

The Trocadero is a pretty good venue. Here are some others you might like:
  • Johnny Brenda's—Great layout, a little smaller than the Troc.
  • Union Transfer—Also a great layout, slightly bigger than the Troc.
  • Theater of Living Arts—Roughly equivalent to the Troc.
  • Underground Arts—Mid-size basement venue.
  • Kung Fu Necktie—One of my favorite places in Philly, lots of character, small and a great place to see a show.
  • North Star Bar—Small, intimate, low-key.
  • Boot & Saddle—Fairly new place that I haven't been to yet but I hear it's pretty intimate.
  • Electric Factory—The biggest venue in Philly that isn't a concert hall or stadium. A lot of times they get pretty crappy acts but sometimes they surprise you.
  • The Mann Center—Large outdoor venue on the site of the former world's fair. Despite being one of those big venues with lawn seats and whatnot it's still pretty nice.
  • The M Room—For very small-time local metal, hardcore and punk type bands. Quality varies but it can be fun.
  • World Cafe Live—More of a roots/world/jazz kind of place than the venues above. One of the most comfortable venues I've ever been to.

I really hate when you go to a show and they change the words or play **** differently or have the audience sing along. I go to hear the music I paid for performed live, not listen to a bunch of idiots in the audience scream the words.

I have only been satisfied with a handful of shows I went to, and I don't even bother going anymore.

Let the flaming commence.
I agree with both of these.

Linkin Park (I believe) is nu metal, along with the notables of Slipknot, SOAD, etc. and all those bands are extremely popular.
Sorry for the late response.

Okay, I agree that Nu Metal is extremely popular. However, it's also an extremely polarizing genre. I hear all the time about how Nu Metal is an awful genre of music, and that bands like Linkin Park and Slipknot are pure ****. Metalheads in particular are the ones who seem to hate the genre the most. Some Metal fans don't even consider Nu Metal to be a true Metal genre. There isn't even any Nu Metal representation on the so called Metal Archive. Oh, and anyone who listens to Nu Metal is a poser in their eyes. According to them, I would be a poser because I am of the belief that you can be a fan of both bands like Slayer, Black Sabbath, Death, and Metallica, and also bands like Korn, Linkin Park, Deftones, and Slipknot.

But the vocals were touched by the technology of amplification. Prior to the invention of microphones people had to sing in ways that put an emphasis on projection (think opera). The invention of microphones allowed people to introduce the kinds of nuance and texture to their singing that we're used to in modern music. It also allowed enhancements such as reverb to be added to the sound.
