There are quite a few albums that I REALLY like that I checked it solely because the album cover looked really awesome. "Pink Moon" being the most significant example that comes to mind

It's just so eerie and strange

I've actually been looking for albums that have a cover which doesn't particularly represent the music on the album well... and I can't find any. Not from my favourite records anyway. Maybe that's just because I familiarize the cover with the music though.

It's such a gamble.
Well sometimes when you gamble it's pays-out. I like the excitement of taken a chance and getting a hidden gem. I was thinking about that today, how I missed that. These are albums back when I use to buy CDs. I haven't heard anything from these bands prior to buying them. And all I spent for them, since I found them in the cut-out bin, was less than $10. Nowadays the only gamble I take is clicking on a link on the youtube sidebar for related artist.

I've also read a few books just cause of their cover. How I discovered Shogun, by James Clavell, one of my all-time favorite books.

Never thought of it like that.

I've also wondered if album covers influence the way you listen to the music as well. There have been times (especially now with streaming being my primary means of listening to music) where I hear the album and then go and check out the album art. It actually changes my perception of the music AFTER I've already heard it. As if the artist was trying emphasize some aspect of the music that I didn't catch without the artwork.

For example, imagine The Velvet Underground and Nico...very iconic album cover. Makes me feel like the band were a bunch of artsy hipsters (and they were, and I'm sure that's the image they wanted to portray). Imagine that album a bleak and dark album cover. In my opinion, the music has a much more cynical and depressing feel to it. Like everything is very sarcastic. It adds a new spin to the music.

Andy Warhol was a genius in that sense.

"Slug Bait"'s lyrics and music are far more terrifying then anything Cannibal Corpse or Mayhem or even Macabre could ever hope to put out. Also, as legitimately creepy as "Hamburger Lady" is, "Slug Bait" definitely wins. How you can come up with that and not be just a little bit serial killery I can only speculate.
