Heavy metal, by and large, is the musical manifestation of stunted adolescence and is seldom characterized by anything beyond phony rebellion, juvenile morbidity and masturbatory cacophony.

Yeah, I said it.
ANTI-METAL

You are dead-on about what it implies upon its fan-base.

Although I still love some metal bands, the majority of metal makes me cringe nowdays. It reminds me of WWE wrestling. The fans are the worst part though, the so-called 'true' metalheads who refuse to listen to anything else or grow up despite being in their 20's or 30's.

But like every musical genre there are plenty of diamonds in the rough, there are certainly some more mature-sounding bands worth anyone's time such as Electric Wizard and Sleep.

That's a lot of words without any real context. You could take any one of those and apply at least one of them to pretty much any genre that is in any way bleak or thoughtful or angry or offers any emotion other than pure unadulterated happiness. Just sayin' :P

Yeah a lot of metal is trash, but so is a lot of any "popular" genre. you always get the fanboys who think they can write something decent clogging up the tubes. But if you use that logic, then music can only be good if it's obscure, and that's something I definitely disagree with.

Maybe metal starts off with that. People that are die hard metalheads well into being middle aged I think take something more from it. I mean, to love it that long I think you really have to. There is more of a community amongst metal fans than any other genre. Every single town you go to will have a metal fanbase and a guaranteed crowd you can hang out with if you are into that. I used to hate metal myself but after hanging out with that crowd in multiple towns now, it has really endeared me to the culture. Usually they are really nice people, especially since a big interest in metal stems from being very insecure (most of the time). Until you insult a band they like, they are very welcoming. I can dig it.

That's a very nice way at looking at that.

no way - there's a high degree of virtuosity - your ears are just no used to it

only a few bands are into "shock" and "rebellion" - quite a lot deal with the social issues, the human condition and having a good time

yeah - the early pioneers of metal are not any of what wayfarer described at all - they only trying to be different from the usual girl-boy thing - see Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin

That's an awful argument!

@Wayfarer: I actually liken heavy metal to classical music perhaps more than most other genres of modern music. Extremely technical instrumentation with lengthy composition, and a lot of heavy metal "is not melody-driven with a few clear and simple harmonies underneath. It is instead a cloth of many threads, all of which must be followed (simultaneously) before the fabric entire and any patterns woven therein become evident."

I just can't get past the goofy delivery anymore. The 'cookie monster' vocals, the uniform 'chugga-chugga' riffs.... it's just so bombastic and theatrical, it kills me.
Well if you dislike cookie monster vocals, bombast, and theatrics, what do you think about Sludge Metal and Stoner Metal? Bands in these genres typically avoid show-offy solos and whatnot.
