I don't think Don't Shoot Me is horrible, remove Crocodile Rock and it's not too bad, but I agree that the albums either side of it are better.

Yeah I think Don't Shoot Me is pretty good too. Not as good as Honky Chateau or GYBR but probably on a par with, or even better than, Tumbleweed Connection.

Though his eponymous album is clearly his best IMO.

Haven't really checked out Caribou much. Though, generally I think his quality went downhill after GYBR.

Captain Fantastic isn't bad but Rock of the Westies is one of his worst. I don't think he ever really recovered after that.
