as for credits, they mostly count for where the money goes when the royalties come in. you want to keep thinking that a singer taking turns writing songs with only one or another of the other 3 guys he works with equals a 'band' effort... well... ok

just curious, where two obvious old schoolers have weighed in on SG. how old are you? just curious really, our perspectives are obviously skewed with memories of the past. it's impossible for us to pick up their entire catalog in one fell swoop and pass impartial judgment on it.

@satchmo - i never said Superunknown was their pinnacle either, only that it was significantly better than Down on the Upside. Louder than Love was good but i still prefer Ultramega OK even if the production suffers.

@ duga - Soundgarden was supposed to the that band that put Seattle on the map - not Nirvana. they were the first 'grunge' act signed to a major label, it just so happened that Nirvana hit bigger. Loud Love came out on a major and served to determine if they could actually be a mainstream commercial act. the fact that they went around the world opening for Gn'R to support Badmotorfinger kind of solidifies the idea that they were working towards mass appeal. though i don't think they had really started getting bent over by the machine for it yet.

As far as I'm concerned, all members of a band contributing to an album makes the album a band effort. I'm not denying that Chris was the main contributor, but he wasn't the only contributor.

I'm 22, obviously not old enough to have appreciated SG in their prime, but I'm not sure why that matters.

first, he was never the only contributor to his albums either.

second, like i said, perspective. there's a huge difference between downloading the discography and considering everything as a whole shot and picking up Superuknown on a whim because your classmate is peer pressuring you for new tunes on the roadtrip back home and apparently this 'spoon man' song is pretty cool ... he started bugging to buy it off me about halfway home haha

either way this is getting nuts. let's just agree that you're user name is truth.

I mentioned earlier about how Soundgarden was supposed to be the big band that broke grunge out. I'm sure the band wanted to gain as much recognition as they could...what band doesn't? I think the GnR thing, though, may seem like the big sellout but it wasn't really about them placing themselves in the context of mass appeal. Axl Rose was notorious at the time for finding bands to obsess over (for a time he wanted to turn GnR into an industrial act after he heard Nine Inch Nails)...so Axl asked Soundgarden to do it. Cornell even said it was a weird tour since no one had really heard them yet and playing songs no one knows in a giant stadium gets a little weird.

But yeah, the whole point I was making earlier was that saying Badmotorfinger was where they decided to start going down on the man isn't really fair.

Well, I have no idea about Scream and Carry On, but in Euphoria Morning, Chris was part of writing the words and music to every song except for Pillow Of Your Bones and Disappearing One where the music was done by Schneider and Johannes. That is quite a bit different than Down On The Upside, where there were songs crafted completely by other members.

Well, don't get me wrong here. I despise downloading music(only exceptions are albums like Smashing Pumpkins Machina II). I HAVE to have an actual physical copy of the album. I don't know why, but that's just how I've always been. Down On The Upside was the first album of theirs I bought, followed by Louder Than Love, followed by Badmotorfinger, followed by Superunknown, followed by Ultramega OK, and I've always thought this has had something to do with DOtU being my favorite. Out of curiosity, is Superunknown your favorite of their albums?

Yeah, I was getting tired of digging out my SG related albums to see who was credited anyway.
