Both "I'm Going to Do What I Want to Do" and "London 1974" are great officially released live Beefheart albums. The "Grow Fins Rarities 65-82" boxset (which you can easily find online if you're not willing to pay the ninety or so dollars for it) has several great performances in Kidderminster, Cannes, Avalon, Detroit, and it even has The Captain performing solo over the phone to WBCN radio, where he does "Harp Boogie", "Natchez Burning", and "Black Snake Moan." All of these are great picks for anyone interested in live Beefheart.

You can also check out the collaborative live album between Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa and the Mothers called "Bongo Fury", but you've probably already checked that one out.

Welcome to Music Banter, by the way.

I have bongo fury, because I'm a huge Zappa fan, but I haven't heard of the others. I will definitely check them out, thanks!

I just bought a Captain Beefheart promotional poster I was eyeing on ebay. I saw it once while looking for a vinyl copy of Mirror Man Sessions and decided that it needed to be in my room. It's Shiny Beast-period and is quite tame in presentation, but it was still too cool to pass up. I'll take a picture once I receive it and it's framed.

I'm mad jealous. I have most of his stuff downloaded but getting his stuff on physical copy has been a slow affair.

I'm looking to get Lick My Decals Off, Mirror Man Sessions, and Ice Cream for Crow. I'd like to get Bat Chain Puller (2012) and Strictly Personal, but I haven't exactly seen them around for on vinyl...but I guess I could settle for CD. Don't have the money to even be thinking about Grow Fin and locating physical copies of bootleg material, but if my love of the Captain continues it could happen someday.

Uh, and I guess I don't have his two "commercial" albums from the mid-70s, but I'd probably end up getting them eventually. Seems important to know his entire career, anyway.

Now Don can watch over me as I sleep, which I assume is how god intended it.
Shame it doesn't exactly fit the frame I had lying around but I'm too cheap to worry about getting an exact one anytime soon.

Also, I met a record store owner who had met Beefheart a few times. His main comment was "He was way out there, and he smoked weird cigarettes." Enough said.

Anyone given the original Bat Chain Puller a listen, by chance?

Interesting interview discussing the process behind some of the Beefheart albums.

Yeah, and it's pretty good. Captain's in a better voice than he is in most of the re-recorded versions of the songs (those couple of years really took their toll!), and most of the tracks are interestingly different instrumentally. If you're a Beefheart fan it's well worth hearing.
