Since I think everyone is stuck on using Nirvana as the 90s i'm not going to bother suggesting other artists. I believe that one of Nirvana's better, though a bit less popular song, like Come As You Are.

The song I would pick though is 21st Century Digital Boy, solely for the reason it got me into Bad Religion, and I think the lyrics are more representative of the 90s than Smells Like Teen Spirit's lyrics are (i'm going to get attacked for saying that).

Did you miss the point of the thread? Aside from the whole its what song goes with each decade for the individual person. I don't see whats so surprising or wrong with using Smells Like Teens Spirit, it was Nirvanas biggest hit and a huge song for the 90s.

I didn't say it was surprising, I honestly expected nothing less than that. Ice, Ice, Baby was a huge song for the 90s and Vanilla Ice's biggest hit, so according to your logic it should be used.

Agreed.

50's - Bill Haley & His Comets - Rock Around the Clock
60's - Bob Dylan - Blowin' in the Wind
70's - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody/Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
80's - The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star (yeah, it was released in 1979 but it represents the decade for me, and is pretty damn close anyway)
90's - Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (Yeah, it really does represent 90's music)
00's - The White Stripes - Fell in Love With a Girl

I'm probably going to end up changing this...

50's: Chuck Berry "Johnny B. Goode" (Back to the future ftw)
60's: The Beatles "Revolution 1"
70's: The Ramones "Blitzkrieg Bop"
80's: The Smiths "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"
90's: Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
00's: Bright Eyes "Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and to Be Loved)"

I can`t choose Smells Like Teen Spirit.
For me the 90s were about taking the best from the past and making it sound modern.Bands using beats & samples , adding technology to it and making it relevent to modern day.Music expanded & people mixed & matched genres more in the 90s than ever before and to me Smells Like Teen Spirit is the total antithisis for that. I don`t think Smells Like Teen Spirit is representative of the 90s at all.
