I'd sat RHCP had it right on early albums, and **** the bed more and more after BSSM. They're very, very disappointing.

Mother's Milk is a fantastic album. BSSM is great too, but I don't think it deserves that much credit especially compared to their previous albums.

I think it's a good album, but it's more of an interesting look at how Chad and John were trying to find their place in the band. Chad was great right out of the box, but John was clearly just pulling his best Hillel impersonation (which isn't surprising considering he idolized RHCP before joining, but still...). I think what makes the album so interesting is that just one album later, he busts out completely comfortable with his own style and voice and totally transforms the band.

I don't think they started ****ting the bed really until Stadium Arcadium. I think we are all in agreement that their early albums are classics, but post BSSM stuff was good in its own right. And yes, even One Hot Minute...it had some good moments. Californication...as commercial as it was...was still a great look at a band somehow making another comeback (and of course followed by By the Way...a personal favorite).

What about BSSM doesn't deserve that praise?

I didn't find it as potently funky like their debut, UMPP, Freaky Styley. They just knew how to make funk rock jump and jump when Hillel was around. Mother's Milk was a killer rock n' roll entrance that blew you away in reformation. BSSM is great, they kind of made it more of a mix between funk and alternative rock but it wasn't as striking, and seemed like it was missing their intense style. Not that it wasn't stylish at all, the song writing is pretty good, and the melodies were still catchy.

Fair enough. I was introduced to post-funk RHCP, so I was more used to the style on Californication and the like. Their funky 80's side really surprised me when I first heard it.

BSSM has one of their funkiest songs of alltime. Power of Equality is an amazing funk jam and Give it Away also. I do agree they went radio friendly in a sense with Breaking the girl and Under the Bridge. That is classic Chilis with the chugging rythym of Frusciante.

Really. Bruce Springsteen is one guy I deeply respect because he matches great music with great lyrics. To me, you must not really apperciate great talents but laughable people, I suppose.

I like laughable people because I can't stand Bruce Springsteen either.
