How are Nirvana underrated? Everyone and their cousin clame to be the biggest Nirvana fans.

Indeed. The stereotypical Tool fan is the problem... Being overrated by your fanbase is completely different than being overrated by the general public.

So, what constitutes as 'underrated' then? If a band isn't getting some kind of critical acclaim then they're more than likely rubbish.

The likes of Nirvana are overrated because they have critical acclaim AND a lot of people know them. If you're not really into music, I doubt you'd know The Wedding Present. So I thought they'd be a decent shout for an underrated band. Then again, if they were the band on everybody's lips it'd piss me off.

Isn't it the same with most bands? Whether it's The Beatles, Radiohead or Nirvana, the fans can be the problem. Fan boys are always annoying, Tool have had critical acclaim and they do have a strong fan base (strong, and annoying for the most part) so surely they constitute as being overrated in some people's eyes.

For some reason, I see more Tool merchandise than anything else. And it's ugly too, with all those eyeballs and shnit.

I've never seen any Tool merchandise, but I've heard a couple of their dull albums.

The Wedding Present are criminally underrated.

Mike Kinsella, under rated.

Except for all the chicago scenesters who praise the Kinsella brothers like gods.

If Nirvana is anything but overrated I'll take a shotgun to my face.

A tough question. My original underrated band was going to be my favorite band - Danko Jones - but they do have critical acclaim and radio play so are they really underrated? Or just not as successful as I'd like them to be?

At to overrated I'd go with The Doors by a wide margin. They made interesting songs but so many of the songs sounded alike that listening to my brother's best of CD drove me up the wall. Yes, their overall sound was innovative, but when your individual songs sound too much alike I get hung up on people calling them brilliant.

Overrated: Animal Collective

Underrated: Ben Harper. I really think Ben doesn't get enough credit today as a good musician, however, if he got too much I would probably hate it. In any case he is definitely one of my favorite musicians of today.
