Yeah, that's one of my favorites on the album. It's interesting hearing a Suicide influence in Springsteen song, I kind of wish he had done more like it.

a) i don't think you could really compare The Doors or Jim Morrison at all with Bruce Springsteen....very different times and styles....and in my opinion both have their places

b) i'm not the biggest Springsteen freak either....but i have a couple of his hits which produce nostalgic feelings when i hear them....specifically Glory Days and Dancing in the Dark....but Nebraska is an incredible album and really brings something different to the plate.....he also wrote a song about Reno .....(it involves having sex with a whore)
bob you are 100 percent. some comparisons are just bad.

I like Bruce Springsteen better when he was influenced by Eddie and the Cruisers.

Who would you consider poetic then?

Morrison is the best poet in music, for sure. He writes his lyrics just like a poem, they are enigmatic and more like mysterious. That's what poets do, they don't say things directly and give you freedom to interpret them yourself.

"Real poetry doesn't say anything; it just opens all doors. You can walk through anyone that suits you." - Jim Morrison

And about The Boss, I don't think that he is overrated at all. It's true that he isn't the greatest songwriter out there, and so what? Elvis hadn't written a song himself, so he is overrated, too?

The only Elvis I like watching, are those Elvis impersonators that perform in Italian restaurants here.

Elvis may be overrated as a musician, but not as an artist. Artist = musicianship, showmanship, originality, influence. So:
Musicianship: 50/100 - He has one of the greatest, if not the greatest voices ever.
Showmanship: 100/100 - Definitely, the greatest showman that ever lived.
Originality: ~85/100 - He may not be the first rock n' roller, but his style (appearance, dancing, voice) is pretty original.
Influence: 200/100 - No need of comment here.

Meh. That is a very, very subjective list. Everything Elvis did, and I mean EVERYTHING, had been done before by African American artists. He basically just copied them and made it socially acceptable amongst the hoity toity whites. I appreciate that he made rock n roll mainstream and popular, but everything he did was being done by others, who were usually better than him. And actually wrote their own songs.
