And I agree with you about Dylan, he's a brilliant lyricist all the same.
One of the most economic songwriters has got to be Smokey Robinson, not a single word wasted.
A lyrical magician who manages to put across so much, with just a single phrase. Genius.
He should be at least in the top 10. He's largely forgotten and underrated in modern times.
Is Dylan good on the musical side as well though? Somehow, I've never heard much of Dylan apart from his 'popular' songs, and that's why I can't judge.

For all of his legendary status in music, I am still not a huge Dylan fan. Highway 61 revisited however, is a great album.

I saw him a couple of years ago at the M.E.N Arena (live being a good yardstick for determining an artists calibre) and musically, he and his band came over as first class.
His singing voice as expected, was a mumbling and incoherent mess, made worse by the venues poor acoustics.
Shame cos I prefer his lyrics to the music every time.

Dylan is great. You want to hear an album where his music goes really well with his words? Check out Bringing It All Back Home. I love that album, especially the second half.

that's a pretty long list. Is Jim brickman a song writer too? I'd like to include him, anyways!

Depends on what you consider 'good music' to be. :\

Bowie should be higher IMO, and Steven Wilson should be in the top ten.
I haven't listened to him in a long time but Wilson is absolutely brull-yint

Problem is PT'S music is decidely retro, so he will never get the respect he deserves. The new PT EP is again a great piece of work.
