 The Soft Boys - A Can Of Bees Punk influenced indiepop about 5 years before anyone else was doing it.  The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Presents Jams In The Crypt Style Blues rock played so raw it makes the White Stripes debut sound like a prog album.  Alex Chilton - Like Flies On Sherbert Chilton at his most fucked up , this is about as far removed from Big Star as you can get. The guy sounds like he can barely hold it together.  The GTOs - Permanent Damage Frank Zappa's babysitter and a bunch of groupies from LA take time out of their busy schedule of sucking cock to record an album. They really shouldn't have bothered.

I only have one Jon Spencer album with the group being officially Blues Explosion-Damage. What an album it is. Love it. Pisses all over the Stripes if you ask me. What others do you reccomend?

Orange & Extra Width have always been my favourites.
Now I Got Worry is probably their most well known album.

 i know people will pull me up on this but I would call this Ambient Metal. If you are into bands like Opeth and like to hear more than just a bunch of riffs then listen to these guys. truly stunning metal album. YO LA TENGO-PRISONERS OF LOVE  Great great indie rock that can be loud and crunchy or quiet and effortless. Perfect little 4 minute nuggets. If you have even a passing interest in Indie then check these guys out. GONG-ANGEL'S EGG  If you want some trippy 70's psychedelic rock then look no further than the immortal gong. It ryhmes with bong, so get on one and listen to this. FAT FREDDY'S DROP-LIVE AT THE MATTERHORN  If this album was anymore laid back it would be horizontal! Four tracks that come in at nearly twenty minutes each whisk you away from your day's troubles. Jazz, Funk and Soul are all part of their genetic make up, but the emphasis is on mood not technicality. Excellent stuff.

Throwing Muses - S/T
 Man, I love this album. It lives somewhere between jangly college rock and the darkness of post-punk. The lyrics sound cut up and nonsensical, yet you do get the strong impression of recurring themes. The vocals are great, probably the best part of the band. Bitches do it better. The Breeders - Last Splash  So far, I think this is overall a slightly better album than Pod. Which means it's pretty damn good. Includes a couple actual hits, some filler, and some really cool off-beat tunes. Art Ensemble of Chicago - Les Stances a Sophie  I've never heard an album sound so deliriously beautiful and ugly at the same time. Butthole Surfers - Hairway to Steven  Takes some of the edge off their earlier records. Really love the acoustic. |

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "The Boatman's Call"
 This is the only Nick Cave album I've heard and I think it's beautiful. The tone is very somber and usually it's just him, a piano and maybe a bass in there too. It kind of reminds me of some Magnetic Fields stuff (Busby Berkeley Dreams) and that's a very good thing. This album is beautiful in it's simplicity and honesty. Favorites Songs: Into My Arms, People Ain't Good, (Are You) The One That I've Been Waiting For? Pulp "Different Class"  This album is like, brilliant eccentric crazy beautiful pop full of lyrics about lovely things like meeting up in the year 2000 and standing there only in your underwear. Favorite Songs: Disco 2000, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E, Underwear, Common People The Raveonettes "Whip It On"  I don't really know what to say about this eh. I had no idea who they were when I was going to see them the name just sounded familiar and I picked this up. It reminds me alot of Psychocandy but I like this better. Favorite Songs: Veronica Fever, My Tornado, Chains The Divine Comedy "A Short Album About Love"  Intimate, moody and very Scott Walker-esque I think this is my favorite Divine Comedy album though I've only heard three (this one, Regeneration and Casanova all of which I liked,) If... is a beautiful sentiment, though slightly creepy at times. This album is quickly becoming one of my favorites, I've listened to it before sleeping nearly every night this week. Favorite Songs: If..., Timewatching, If I Were You (I'd Be Through With Me)

This band reminded me of a sludgedoom version of Draconian, which is why I really liked them. The Fall of Troy - Manipulator  This is probably my favorite TFOT album. I have been listening to this album daily for at least two months and can't get enough from it. Personally I think Erak put a lot more into this album then any of the others, and the changes from the poppy sensation to the Prog to the Post-Hardcore meltdowns is just amazing. I really think that TFOT are one of, if not the, best Post-Hardcore bands out there. |
