Charles Mingus - Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

I've enjoyed quite a bit of jazz, but its never been a genre that I crave. I've never had that moment like with other music where the only thing that can satisfy my ears is some jazz. I've listened to it mostly out of respect and curiosity. I've been motivated to keep listening to it because I was sure there was some jazz record out there that would click with me and help me understand the true brilliance of this style of music. I've finally found that record. I don't know why it took me so long to listen to Charles Mingus, but now I'm kicking myself for it. I started listening to this record and eventually found myself thinking..."how the **** are they doing this?"

Great freaking stuff. I need more jazz like this.

Jazz is a weird thing with me. None of it ever really clicks, but I'm pretty much up for listening to any of it. I wish I could find something that reminded me of the late afternoon. Most all Jazz makes me think of the late, late night. Smooth Jazz makes me think of the city, and of the airport, sometimes even the beach, so I quite like (most of) it. But not enough to seek out. That is unless I can find something that SCREAMS "Tampa", or "you on vacation. You ain't got shit to worry about". As of yet, only Progressive House can do that.

On a side note, I've been enjoying this momentous collaboration:

Thom Yorke, Four Tet, & Burial - Ego/Mirror

I wish it was a whole album though. But since I haven't heard a new Burial song in a couple months now, I'm happy. I still want a full album, but this will do for now.

Heh. Those seem like weird thing to want out of jazz music. Why would anyone want anything that screams "Tampa"?

as of now, my favorite Lil B album, i can't even say it's a hip-hop album as much as it's free associated spoken word over ethereal keys and landscapes.

his newest mixtape, Illusions of Grandeur, is more standard, but pretty good. listening to it, i can really tell he's wanting to be taken more seriously now, and i'm all for that

Cause I like Tampa! I was just joking around about that bit. I know nothing could ever remind me of an individual city. BUT I would want it to remind me of somewhere warm and nice, because it always reminds me of a dark smoky lounge. Kind of in the same way that a good portion of Spanish music makes me think of a hot city with lots of sand. I don't like that. It's reasons like this that make my taste in music all kinds of screwed.

That seems like such a weird reason to dislike music. Why not try and learn to appreciate all those environments instead?

At any rate here's a jazz song I like a lot that to me suggests somewhere nice and warm:

It's not merely dislike, but an actual feeling of being uncomfortable or agitated. The scenery in this video is a good example of stuff I just hate (the tunnel is alright, I'm more referring to the desert town):

I don't know where it comes from. I tend not to listen to music as something stand alone, but more as a piece of experience; something to pair with an image and feeling. Any song that I listen to evokes some kind of imagery, and some kind of feeling. The feeling isn't something simple like happiness or sadness, but more or less a feeling that is specifically tied to the imagery. If I don't like it, then I just can't like it. I never feel like I'm missing out on anything because it isn't merely based on preference, it's just how I think.
