Kendrick Lamar - Section.80 (2011)

Compton emcee who's only in his early to mid 20's debut album, and what an album it is. Compton has always been an epicenter for gangsta hip hop, however this is very far from its predecessors. In fact, this seems to be the exact opposite of say Straight Outta Compton (1988) by N.W.A. yet despite not being a carbon copy, or even meaningful imitation, the album really does take on a life of its own. Kendrick is more of an introverted individual who has spent more time looking for the answers to life within himself. Many of the songs are about trying to find his place in this ever-changing world, a feeling that many Gen Y-ers can sympathize with. Yet despite his tendencies to lean towards introverted self examination he isn't above just have a good time and writing songs about it. I think that's definitely his strength, his ability to play to multiple audiences at the same time. His nasal voice will probably be the deciding factor for some people, but he has a great flow, great writing style, and even if you don't like the songs, you have to respect the beats, cause god damn.

You'll definitely want to get in on this if you like hip hop.

The Good, The Bad, And the Queen

I've been holding off on listening to this for years,because it has so many things against it

1. It's by a super group that includes Damon Albarn and my favourite bassist of all time, Paul Simonon.
2. I regarded it as a potentially ****ty post-Clash outfit, stupidly and those are terrible and I don't want my favourite band (and its equally holy members) to be tainted for me

Which is really stupid, because it's really a terrific album, pretty much all I've been listening to for the past week. I don't think Damon ever disappoints, honestly.

I quite enjoy that album. It always goes by faster than I expect it to.

Anna Nalick - Wreck Of the Day

A few ok songs, but otherwise it's far too bland for my liking, veering dangerously close to sounding a bit like Alanis Morrisette. Dunno what possessed me to get hold of this - maybe I was suffering concussion at the time or something.

The Beautiful South - Quench

Much as I like these guys, often their albums suffer the same pitfalls a lot of pop albums with great, catchy singles on them do - a few really, really good songs surrounded by mediocrity. This one's an exception though - just a great, upbeat little pop album through and through. Gotta wuv it.

This is what P.I.L's Metal Box album would have sounded like if they had a female singer & wrote pop songs aimed at dancefloors in trendy clubs.

I love the dark horrish lyrics of Danzig(sp), and it was so easy to get into.

Definitely one of their better albums, but none compare to 0890. It's just too good.
