Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence (2014)

Because it's the best album ever.

Might be his best solo album yet.
I can't believe me and Frown seem to be the only fans of his on MB.
Even if you don't care about the inhuman virtuosity, this is just beautiful.

rostasi 04-28-2017 07:40 AM

Yeah, been listening to this for the past week or two.
It's even better that his second volume of New History Warfare.
Goes out with a grand bang on Lure of the Mine.

Yeah, it's an amazing finale.
Apparently he has recorded enough material for two albums and the second part will be released some time this year. Really looking forward to this.

rostasi 04-28-2017 07:44 AM

Maybe we can see a box set in his future like Nate Wooley's latest masterwork.

Now Playing:

Thanks for the heads-up.

I was disappointed, but am glad to see that he's not in a rut, which the New History Warfare series made me worried about (even though they're great). I only listened to it once though, I might be more into it on future listens.

To See New Light (song) is his best work to date imo.

If you get the physical box set, it has a couple of booklets inside.
I love reading about compositional approaches which is what one
of the booklets reveals and the other booklet consists of the actual
scores themselves. Nice to have these works, that were once scattered,
all together in a nice hard box. His Sound American publishing is good too.

any thoughts on the Thurston Moore album?

I like it 'cause it's kind of an extension of the best bits of The Best Day.
Sedwards, Googe and Shelley are here and it's a more exploratory
guitar-based thing rather than lyric-heavy short cuts. The shortest cut
tho has been released as a vid that has a nice Sedwards solo mid-way.

I was a little sceptical about this one as they look a bit of a turn to the electronic stuff but as usual, they never disappoint.
Great blend of Electronic, dance, Jazz fusion, acid, funk, soul, disco etc

Cool to see more influence of genre working for a bands growth of sound

I thought it was just okay. Definitely a nice hit of nostalgia but that faded fast for me.

City & Colour - If I Should Go Before You (2015)

This is quite possibly the best City & Colour album released to date. And he's had some damn good albums. (again, don't be fooled by my last.fm. i listen on my phone mostly.)

I was surprised by how much I liked this when we first started playing it at the bookstore. It actually never got old even though I heard it probably 100 times.

Included.
Also I hate you. There are few artists, probably none active, I'd like to see live more.
Did his sax vibrate your body and make you cum?

I trust your opinion on finding the underlying fun in "subjectively terrible" music and I do admire the vast majority of your music taste so I'll probably end up enjoying at least a few tracks from it.

for the reasonable price of whatever you want you can download this

This album was so nice. It's choicely heavy and progressive-ish black metal laying a foundation for folksy artcore, so it sounds like a black metal version of mewithoutYou. If I had to say anything negative, it's much too short.

I'm throwing some records out I've yet to listen to, I just need to know which of them I should put high on the priority list:

British Sea Power - Let The Dancers Inherit The Party
Colin Stetson - All This I Do For Glory (or any of his records for that matter)
Aimee Mann - Mental Illness
Spiral Stairs - Doris & The Daggers
Craig Taborn - Daylight Ghosts
Froth - Outside (Briefly)
Mono - Requiem For Hell
Dog Party - 'Til Your Mine

Btw Q I love that Blacklisted record you recc'd.

Frownland 05-02-2017 03:10 PM

I would check out Colin Stetson's New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges if I were you. Even as a fan, I haven't quite warmed up to his new record yet.

Remember when I said a couple years back Carrie & Lowell makes me want to vomit? Ok fine I take that back. But the track "All of me wants all of you" still is vomit-inducing.

Devin Townsend Project - Epiclouder (2012)

So I'm a ****ing idiot and never actually listened to the extension of Epicloud. I don't know why I haven't yet but this is fantastic. 10 extra tracks that I've yet to hear from Epicloud as a whole.

Anteater 05-04-2017 06:36 PM

^ Everyone could use a little moar Townsend in their lives.

Lezzee what I've got here-

Some of the best ambient ever.

As good a mid 80's love letter to the apocalypse as anyone could have asked for. 'Dancing The World Away' is a stellar opening track.

About as weird and fun as you'd expect. Would be nice if The Residents lived forever...

^^^ I proceeded to listen to Z2 afterwards, and back when it was released, I know it got a lot of mixed opinions. Don't really see why as it's pretty solid.

Most of Z2's praise was for the Sky Blue side if memory serves. Whole thing is solid as a brick though.

Too much narrative just told through exposition rather than through the music like the original one. That was my major bugbear with the album.

Also Anteater is right in saying that Sky Blue was the stronger of the two.

Key 05-04-2017 07:09 PM

I do enjoy Sky Blue a lot more. I was just more-so saying as the structure of the album altogether is fantastic. Though I will say that it is nice that Sky Blue followed the same type of theme that Ghost and some of his older albums. I won't deny it's definitely the better half.
