Red House Painters - Down Colorful Hill

A depressing series of events. This has always been my favorite Red House Painters album to hear in its entirety (even though "Katy Song" off of Rollercoaster is easily one of my favorite songs of all-time, the entire album is very taxing). It's as of late that even the most questionable moments on this album have fallen into place. "Lord Kill the Pain" sort of seems like a joke at first, but it gets better each time. I'd still say it's a bit awkwardly bright for the subject matter, but hey... "Japanese to English" also sounds better than usual, even though I find the way Koz pronounces the chorus really grating ("JAPUHNEESE TO ENGLISH... AND ENGLISH TO JUHPAN... EEEEEEEESEEEE!!!!"). The other four songs are simply remarkable in their own ways. "Down Colorful Hill" is both hopeful and hopeless, a completely beautiful contradiction. "Medicine Bottle" is frighteningly impacting. "24" will make anybody who feels like they've been wasting their lives on something cringe. And "Michael" is just a beautiful ode to a lost one. It's really quite something.

^ My favorite track off of the album, complete with hypnotizing drums and a painful chorus. It seems to go on forever, and I wouldn't have it any other way. "Prayers, prayers, always die in time..."

Still one of my favourite unsung 80's U.K bands coming somewhere in-between Echo & The Bunnymen and The Cure but not sounding like either.

Big Star - Number One Record

Hadn't even heard of Big Star until a couple weeks ago when I was stalking my sister's lastfm and realized they were one of her favorite bands. I downloaded this album a while ago but finally got around to listening to it today and it's pretty amazing. The first time I listened to it, my gut reaction was sort of indifferent, but realizing it was released in 1972 gave me a whole new appreciation for the album. One of those albums you'd consider to be more influential than it was popular.

This is the Smog album I keep coming back to ever since I've first heard it, somewhere in the late 90s. agreed. i love smog because of their awesome lack for both simplicity and dissonance. just such an interesting and moving sound for lo-fi to adopt. amazing.

I heard this last year and didn't think that much of it, but I'm really digging it right now. Not really a big Math Rock fan or anything, but this album is pretty awesome. my favourite songs are "Caramel" and "Little Bubble, Where Are You Going?". Not something that would make it's way into my daily rotation, but it has really pretty guitar work and it sort of suits what I'm in the mood for at the moment.

This album is some of the greatest black metal/ambient music ever recorded in my honest opinion. The usage of all these different types of instruments work so well together and just create such an eerie atmosphere. The guitars are a little bit 'raw' and have that well crunchy sound that so many black metal bands are known to have. The hardest part to get into at first will probably be the vocals as they are a bit annoying upon the first listen, but for me I grew use to them and was no longer annoyed by them.
