Kevin Coyne - Marjory Razorblade



Absolutely superb album. Coyne has this pained, unhinged style to his blues guitar compositions, with a voice that's often heartbreaking.

Here's a vid of him playing a track from the album; House on the Hill, live. So good.

be careful, i call it deep house, but i don't think that's the "official" name for it. i just find it to be a fitting name for this style of downbeat music...

I have to say that no this is not really the sound of traditional deep house. I goes in that direction, with the chill 4/4 beat, but the intro and overall pace of the song are not typical of deep house at all, and there are some IDM flourishes throughout (the intro even wouldn't be out of place on an IDM album). So perhaps an evolution of deep house, I haven't been paying attention for almost 10 years, but not traditional deep house. It lends itself more to casual listening than the club environment (and when I say that I don't mean a funky/disco/hard house club environment - I mean even a "chill room" deep house environment). This just feels more like a singer's song, than a dance song, that just happens to be electronic.

On a side note, I'm not at all a fan of the vocals.

No problem! It really is great. And ohh yes. I sure did. NYC is probably my favorite track. Street Halo would be my second. I SO hope he comes out with a whole album this year. I think he's the closest thing I have to a favorite artist. Music for me is so personal, and his songs just strike a chord somehow. They all remind me of the night and the city. Not so much hustle and bustle, but more dark and mysterious. JUST social enough to keep it from sounding too isolated.
