Folksy and catchy but still serious. 8/10

Cool Hand Luke - Of Man

Beautifully haunting. A great cocnept album. 9/10

Lykke Li - I Never Learn

Lykke Li has grown with every album. This album concludes a "trilogy" of sorts starting with her debut Youth Novels. While I don't think they are all tied together with any cohesive story (that I could discern, anyway), they definitely flow in their themes. Youth Novels sounded very upbeat, young, and naive...like new love and all the possibilities it has. Wounded Rhymes carried that into something more mature. It has the sound of an assured relationship where there are problems but still hope. I Never Learn is all of that crashing down. This is a breakup album if there ever was one. I also find this unique because she places all the blame squarely on herself, whereas most breakup albums tend to blame the other person or are a little more ambiguous. The sound of the album is sullen with most of the upbeat sounds of the last 2 albums gone, and it really works for her. Lykke Li has got some real talent. At 38 minutes, the length is just right as well.

I'm glad more people on the forum have the album now that it's closer to being officially out. I grabbed it a few weeks ago and it's been a pretty steady rotation since then, even two of my roommates have been spinning it pretty regularly. It's certainly a departure from their previous two albums, but I think it's far more focused, even if it meant it lost the kind of "life of the party" attitude I loved about the previous two albums.

I don't think they pull off the more conventional approach. It ended up boring me quite a lot. I definitely preferred their gimmicky and up beat stuff. Without the elements of fun and nostalgia, I think they fell short of engaging me through their playing/composition.

Maybe I would grow to enjoy it more but I'm certain I will never like it that much.
