i used to be a total deadhead,.....back in my hootie smokein days,.....i still get in the grove from time to time,....but really i think what the greatful dead had to offer was a 'movement',.......ever been to a dead show? there's such a sence of 'family' with dead fans,......young and old alike,.....plus the opened the door for and influenced some of the greatest musicans of our generation,....
cut the dead some slack y'all,......

I think the Grateful Dead were the Timothy Leary of music, more than the Beatles or Jimi Hendrix.
When I think Grateful Dead, I think Bill Walton, reminiscing about the times of old, when it was cool to be free, and let the music take you where you wanted to go. The Grateful Dead's sound really symbolized freedom, their music says more for the hippie generation than probably any other band, except possibly Dylan.
I just get visions of tye-dye intertwined with Jerry Garcia's long curly flowing mane, and spirit, and have the feeling it's okay to be whoever you want to be.

amen,....

for me,....the dead represents a time in my life when i really got comfortable with who i am,.....that was a time in my life when i relized i need to love my quirks and not 'go with the flow',.......and now when i listen to them,.....i think of standin on the bank of the lake,....fly rod in hand,....sortin it all out,......and just losein myself in both song and in the nature surrounding me

Good job Savannah.
@USed2lguy: I didn't like 54% of your choices, those were just the ones I didn't think were totally horrible and ridiculous.

THere were like maybe ten bands on there that actually deserved to be on a list of 50 greatest bands. The rest were horrible. And the Greatful Dead weren't that great either

Why were the Grateful Dead so great? So far all the reasons have been based upon nostalgia, not a good basis for a musical argument.

Wait a minute ProggyMan, did you like the bands you highlighted on my text, or dislike them? I'm beginning to get confused.
