It's not a popularity contest, The Beatles wouldn't be my number 1 either.

I know you all hate Weezer, and I also agree they don't belong on this list due to inconsistency. But if you can't The Blue Album was a perfect pop/alt. rock album, then you don't have a good enough taste for the genre.

I also lol'd at AC/DC sneaking their way onto the list. And apparently Sleepy Jack thinks the Beastie Boys belong on the list

What's wrong with Weezer, guys? Perhaps not top 10 or 20 material, but why not in a top 50 list?

To me, Weezer are poster boys of mediocrity... Not good, not bad. Just steadily pumping out so-so music.

They are totally awesome songwriters, that's why The Fall of Troy cites them as a big influence

nah, Bush had more good going for them than just one song.

They had about 4 good songs, you'll find.

Depends on your definition of what constitutes a 'great' band,

For me, it would comprise of great musicians that produced great music (and preferably innovative music also) over a decent length of time (one hit wonders aren't great, although their hit might have been)

My choices would be:

Miles Davis Quintet (Kind of Blue vintage)
Return To Forever (Romatic Warrior vintage)
Yes (Fragile / Close to the Edge vintage)
Frank Zappa (although his lineup changed so often it's hard to pick the best one)
Cream
Miles Davis (Bitches Brew vintage)
