Depends on the kind of prog it is.

I don't mind some King Crimson , and I do like Krautrock or prog that has some kind of psychadelic twist to it.

What really turns me off is neo classical noodling with high pitched vocalists.

I agree with Seltzer, Lee on bass is extraordinary,
Peart on drums is extraordinary,
however I find their guitar playe extremely pretentious.
That's probably why I went with AIC.

How do you find Alex pretentious?

Miltamec Soundsquinaez 02-07-2008 05:54 PM

Usually, his guitar playing doesn't bug me that much, but when he breaks off into those solos he annoys the hell out of me. It's almost like he's got this steal-the-show thought in his mind.

I much prefer a guitarist like David Gilmour, who, while not always technically impressive, his solos are always very complimentary to the song. He doesn't 'WOW' me that much, but I find his playing very tolerable and enjoyable, the opposite of Rushguy's IMO.

Considering Alex is probably the most underrated of the three, I've never really thought of it that way. Perhaps that's the reason solos were excluded from Vapor Trails. I like his solos though, they slot in when they're needed, not for the sake of having solos.

They all have their merits but none would even make it into my top 200 let alone 100.

I thought you were talking about Aesop Rock.

I don't really get how you came to that conclusion, considering I responded to a post you made about Geddy Lee.

ProggyMan 02-07-2008 08:49 PM

It was also about Aesop.

I grew up around a lot of Rush. Its most of what I heard as a kid. I vote for Rush. I liked AIC once, but there was no staying power, they couldn't hold my interest.
