Can - Tago Mago

I think I may have brought this album up in this thread a while back, but I need to talk about it again. I've just given this another run (I'd say roughly my 10th listen). I finally got through the whole thing. Why has it been so hard? Because I just don't freaking get the last half of this album. Why do I keep listening to it? Because the first half of this album is really damn good. Every time I've listened to it so far, I've found myself getting really into it and thinking "Surely I just missed something...this is great, the second half has got to have something". Then a few minutes into Aumgn, I just lose it. This album has been the biggest anomaly in my collection. I feel as if I could love it, but I can't. It is driving me nuts. I want to love it. I hear the potential, but my brain is just not clicking with all of it.

So someone please explain the second half of this album. Tago Mago has received a lot of praise on this forum, so someone explain how you got into the whole thing.

to be honest i like Margarine Eclipse and Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night alot more, here things just seem to meander and it feels at times like they don't know where to go

where is your cut-off for the first half? after oh yeah or halleluhwah?

at first I just liked the first three songs. then after a few more listens I started to really get into halleluhwah. it's hypnotic and has some great solos scattered about.

aumgn is a different story. it's certainly among the strangest songs I've ever loved. I imagine experiencing it on psychedelics would be a severe mind-****. I suggest revisiting it when you feel you can give it a fair shake.

I would say my cut off is after Halleluhwah now...it really doesn't start to get all that shaky until Aumgn. And since I finally got through it, I've found I actually like some of the stuff after Aumgn as well...that's just a tough song to get through for me (and with my extremely anal quirk of never skipping a song, I obviously can't just skip it haha).

I gave it one more listen today and I can safely say officially that Aumgn is the only song I'm still having issues with. So...yay Can! I also just downloaded Ege Bamyasi on Janszoon's recommendation, so I'll see how they sound elsewhere. I've just been stuck on Tago Mago because of this Aumgn nonsense.

Ege Bamyasi is easily their most accessible album.
You should sail through it.

Edit: I've owned Tago Mago around 14 years now. I still think Aumgn is crap.

Sleigh Bells - Treats
I've let this album sit with me for a while and, although it's not exactly awful, I just don't see what on earth the fuss is about it. I don't see what got this onto best of 2010 lists. It sounds very cheap, trashy and throwaway, and very much lacking in depth and substance. Although I'm quite used to listening to albums with a harsh, abrasive production, the production on this album just gives me a headache and makes it's 30 minute running time seem much longer.

Tago Mago is really an album you need to have on LP, so you can skip past Augm. I kind of like it in theory, but most of the time I end up listening to just the first three songs. Augm is tough, which I suspect Can knew. I think Future Days is the most accesible Can album I've heard. That album woudn't hurt a fly. My favorite, though.
